Rooting itself in nuanced tech-noir, The Tangle unfolds into breathtaking lyrical poetry about human ambition and "the caverns measureless to man." Go to Full Review

[A] hard-boiled techno-noir to which close attention must be paid. Fortunately, this intriguing bit of speculative fiction is also an enticing piece of filmmaking, making that requirement a pleasure. Go to Full Review

For a sci-fi feature, it's certainly not visually-stimulating; perhaps it would've worked better as an audio-book. Go to Full Review

Electric C @EConsciousness 3d If you like the detective noir type of story, mixed in with a futuristic atmosphere, this will be a uniquely satistying movie. Do not expect constant physical action, this is not that type of movie. If you can understand tension building throughout dialog, the scenes with our main characters are a masterful lesson in building relationships and intention, without forced exposition. The phrases our characters use express the way the tangle has altered English even. When you start to question what is really happening on the phone calls, that is when you reach deep into the storyline and start to chew on the implication of our characters past and future actions. Delightfully quirky story. One of my all time favorite movies honestly. See more Bryan S @RT73242155 05/25/2025 It's low budget. It's a little bit obtuse. But, the underlying story is really good. This isn't the flash/bang science fiction of Dune, Star Wars, or Star Trek. The action here is mostly in your imagination. The story is somewhat understated. They don't beat you over the head with the weighty issues, but they're there if you're paying attention. See more Dan D @Goku4032 03/14/2025 Slow burn murder mystery set in an AI controlled world. While AI is seen as the villian, humans always turn out to be the worst thing on the planet. A good movie that is worth the watch. See more nick s @Nick_S 07/28/2024 A static, joyless talk fest. The acting was a little forced but okay for Indie level. The dialogue and exposition was never ending. Far more tell than show. The script may have been passable for a stage play but it was a poor choice for cinema. See more Traildude @RT50934922 01/01/2023 It's a slow, slow build that requires paying attention as the back-time scenes catch up with the present, but it is definitely worth the wait! The "pre-WWW" sets give it almost a gangster flair that suggests a dark mood without having to make it explicit. I caught myself thinking, "What a tangled web we weave..." Nanotech as portrayed in the movie isn't likely to happen; there are physics constraints on things below the micro scale that practically forbid anything smaller, but this suspension of disbelief is definitely called for. Occasional treats pop up as well for those who are aware of the archaeology related to the actual Kublai Khan and the real Xanadu. Reading the text of Coleridge's Xanadu fits well with the movie. I memorized it for a poetry contest long ago in high school, and lines came back to me now and then through the movie, lines not quoted in the movie. I could well believe that this film was the product of the sort of creativity that brought Coleridge to pen his poem. The result on screen may be no "pleasure palace", but it does live up to "walls and towers were girdled round" and the sense of mystery both dark and bright on which this movie sets sail. See more Jonathan S @Jwsasser 04/05/2022 How much gumshoe cliche dialog can you cram into one movie? a lot. I can't suspend disbelief because I can't believe people who talk like that programmed anything let alone a god-level AI. Acting was good enough, played well for the budget. I didn't mind the concept. Effects are sparse and it's not very visual but I'm understanding. I thought the Sam Spade crap was a joke.. nope, the whole movie is like that. I get it. It's stylized, metaphorical, allegorical, poetic, an homage to film noir, and a futuristic ode to the bygone days of that film era. I still didn't like it. It's a high concept with a problematic presentation. See more Read all reviews
