Alain E A very satisfactory British film noir resuscitated with a restored copy on Tubi. A married man conducts an affair with his own wife’s sister, supposedly because the wife is boring, although we are not given any evidence that the sister, who is single, is either more attractive or a brilliant conversationalist. When the sister gets pregnant the husband asks for a divorce which his wife refuses. As most reasonable people would do, at that point the husband and the mistress decide that in order for their child to be born in a loving family, they need to expedite the wife’s demise. In the meantime the wife learns that she has a life threatening cardiac condition and decides to grant the divorce. When she goes to her sister’s house to give her the news she overhears the two lovers plotting her murder. She keeps silent and prepares a smart counteroffensive. In the end crime doesn’t pay for either of the three protagonists. The whole thing is remarkably well made and items in the plot that appear random , eventually play a crucial role.
