Critics Consensus

Cozy as an undemanding beach reach and just as slight, this starry murder mystery leverages its terrific troupe of actors to nostalgic effect.

Wendy Ide Observer (UK) There’s plenty of money on screen in the handsome production design, but something meagre and perfunctory about the storytelling. Oct 7, 2025 Full Review Maxwell Rabb Chicago Reader There is some shock value, but the film goes too far in evading the truth; it nearly forgets to establish an emotional tether between the audience and its suspects. Sep 5, 2025 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com Sometimes all you need is a nice, safe, and utterly pleasant piece of cinematic diversion that doesn’t insult your intelligence and is made with sturdy, workmanlike competence. Rated: 3/4 Sep 5, 2025 Full Review Mel Campbell ABC Radio (Australia) It was crap! … I love an anti-developer narrative, but it was so insubstantial. … I felt embarrassed for these actors, the way they were capering. There are so many good examples of this kind of thing done so much better; just watch one of them instead. Oct 15, 2025 Full Review Steve Murray ArtsATL The mystery, in the first of what will likely be a series of films, isn’t really that interesting. But it draws in fine stage-and-screen actors like David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Naomie Ackie and Daniel Mays. Oct 3, 2025 Full Review Steve Crum Crum on Showbiz The title and overall concept smacks of Hulu’s ‘Only Murders in the Building,’ but ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ has a unique spin that makes it well worth watching. Pongo K This movie is made for you if you are 75 plus. Younger than that, stay away! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/21/25 Full Review Chris H This was always going to be be a disappointment I suppose. I'm a fan of the books (or at least the first two) and was hoping that some of their charm would transfer to the big screen. Alas no. The characters are poorly realised and in some cases verging on absurd caricatures of the very three dimensional sleuths in Osman's novels. The worst culprit is probably Ron, who looks like a Hollywood film star here (and sounds like one), but Ibrahim is also badly served, with all his charm boiled away (and who put him in those clothes??). Elizabeth is not formidable in the slightest, just a woman having a jolly jape. Joyce is the only one that comes close. Of course it was ever thus with adaptations of novels, but the most heinous crime of all here is that the enigmatic and dangerous Bogdan is reduced to a callow youth who seems lost in it all. Decent, undemanding Sunday afternoon telly if you've never read the books. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/21/25 Full Review Sherrie F. A terrible script with poor dialog, executed well enough to enjoy the amazing cast that deserved a much better canvas. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/21/25 Full Review Paula K. Fun, entertaining Who-Done-It. Great actors, interesting plot. Worth the watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/21/25 Full Review Ronn P I had read all four books, one of them twice, when I first watched the movie. The first half was brilliant, and the acting was, of course, superb. But for me, knowing how the book ended, the first half felt like it was written by one person, while the second half was written by someone else. Or like the screen play was getting too long, and they just had to wrap it up some how. With Bogdan, a significant character in all the books, taking the rap, I don't how they can make a movie out of the second book. But perhaps that was never the intent. We'll see. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Aly G Wonderful cast with witty lines that make it sensationally entertaining and thrilling. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
