What to Know

Critics Consensus

Led by a stellar Denzel Washington, The Tragedy of Macbeth strips the classic story down to its visual and narrative essentials.

Audience Says

Although The Tragedy of Macbeth may not really add anything new to the long list of Shakespeare adaptations, it's visually striking and the cast is terrific.

Joel Coen's adaptation pushes the mythic parameters of the story, turning it into an existential thriller of strange and potent beauty. Go to Full Review

Everyone exists in this ominous otherworld that feels so appropriate for characters who are caught between film and theater, ambition and loyalty, insanity and sanity, humanity and inhumanity. Go to Full Review

It's not exactly cheerful holiday viewing, but this "Macbeth" is nonetheless a gift. Go to Full Review

The film feels like a creative eruption, boldly different, a singular vision within his duopolistic career. It’s admirably aberrant. Yet it’s also, in its own way, uniquely disengaged. Go to Full Review

A hardened neo-noir from a time before noir had a name. It’s a story of self-made losers striking at glory, but who, through hubris and self-doubt, are unable to hold on to it. Go to Full Review

Grace 02/28/2022 The acting and cinematography was above excellent which is 'nuff said. All of the actors were, as expected, just beyond good. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I had a hard time following just because it's Shakespeare and I'm not great with it fortunately I was able to follow along on my phone (I know) the plot line and some of the key scenes/lines to understand (the theater was near empty and I used low light so it did not bother anyone). Besides a slightly slow start, the film is gripping. Denzel is fantastic as MacBeth, being one of the only actors to be able to enforce the authority required for the role. The production design is fascinating. It feels very hypnotic, giving the film a surrealist feel rather than a realistic one, which is benefitted by how the film is lit and framed. Overall, it is a little disappointing to have had Ethan Coen retiring from filmmaking, but Joel can still knock it out of the park. I enjoyed the movie. A fan of Shakespeare's work would enjoy the movie. See more Shirley Ann 02/11/2022 Effects were terrific! See more Read all reviews
