The Traitor

What to Know

Critics Consensus

While it doesn't probe particularly far below the surface of its central character, The Traitor tells its fact-based story with enough energy to entertain.

Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) Favino, a familiar face internationally as a lumpen heavy, gives a galvanising career-best performance... Rated: 4/5 Nov 22, 2020 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times The Traitor has all the trappings of an indecently immoral entertainment. Yet it has turned out be oddly flattened. Rated: 3/5 Aug 14, 2020 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) A complex character study emerges, one that is inherently unflattering (Buscetta is a ruthless killer), in a restlessly intelligent film. Rated: 4/5 Jul 24, 2020 Full Review Ben Flanagan Vague Visages “It wouldn’t be surprising to see ‘The Traitor’ filed in the Dad-canon of crime cinema alongside other European films like ‘Mesrine’ or ‘The Baader Meinhof Complex’ — films where the context is too wide to sufficiently cover…” Feb 10, 2024 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ...movies like The Traitor are worth tracking down for their fearless adherence to the ideals of morality. This is a deluxe mob movie, done with the kind of wit, intelligence, and scrupulous spirit that make it a must see... Rated: 5/5 Nov 30, 2023 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut Marco Bellocchio’s The Traitor is his latest slice of unconformist Italian cinema whose mafia tale is a brutal knockout. It has such a rare script that goes against everything we know about conventional mob-genre film rules. It’s a cinematic miracle. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 27, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Alec B A legal drama that is more compelling than I anticipated. The reason is that the movie never really allows for a moment of triumph for Buscetta or the legal system intent on bringing the Mafia down. There are only small victories surrounded by violence and bitter disappointments. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review Serge L Different take on the mafia, not embellishing anything. The traitor was effectively less traicherous than other mafiosi. The film appears raw and not licked, which adds some credibility. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/18/22 Full Review Tony S A footnote in history of Cosa Nostra. It skillfully presents a complex character of a turncoat, who is facing both his mortality and tries to justify to himself and other, that his traitory isn't a fault of his own. Great reenactments of trial scenes, that were turned into a grotesques circus. With authentic Italian hand gesturing all around. However, the acting sometimes slips into borderline comedy and chaff. The extensive hallucination scenes and metaphorical allusions to themes are really blunt and movie really hammers them in, leaving really few ones for interpretation. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/28/21 Full Review Audience Member A good biopic on Buscetta's life, great acting by Pierfrancesco Favino. (Tommaso Buscetta) Might be better to do some research on the Sicilian Mafia, before watching this movie. A fantastic movie nonetheless.
