Critics Consensus

The Truth may not stand with Hirokazu Kore-eda's best work, but it finds the writer-director revisiting familiar themes with a typically sensitive touch.

John Anderson Wall Street Journal Funny, wry, emotionally potent, and like most films by Hirokazu Kore-eda operates on multiple levels -- usually some kind of domestic tragicomedy under which lies profound existential disquiet. Apr 7, 2022 Full Review Sara Stewart Book & Film Globe The Truth has flaws, and it feels small-screen to me, although I suppose that's true of every movie that comes out right now. But Catherine Deneuve is a total delight as the fabulous, frank Fabienne. Rated: 3/5 Jul 25, 2020 Full Review Ty Burr Boston Globe Using compassion and the slightest touch of syrup, Kore-eda brings his characters to a place where they realize with shock that they're finally on the same page. Rated: 3.5/4 Jul 16, 2020 Full Review Dallas King Outtake Mag Deneuve is an absolute riot as Fabienne, dishing out sass like it’s going out of couture fashion... The Truth hurts, but Kore-eda’s family drama doesn’t do much more than bruise. Rated: 3/5 Nov 11, 2022 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut The truth about The Truth is Kore-eda’s film only goes as deep as the shallow and vain mindset of the Fabienne character, which limits its impact. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 1, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “The Truth” is a treat for those of us who love sitting back and watching great performers act. Thanasis S A great opportunity missed; the gradual approaching of the two conflicting characters wasn't as gradual. It came right at the end in a too easy way, without any deeper nuances. No going deep into human mind in this movie. However, Deneuve's acting is indeed something else. Also great is Binoche. I did not understand what was the point of having Ethan Hawk's character in the story. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review julie b Small, subdued, charming and well executed exploration of mother daughter dynamics, pride, and aging. It’s not anything truly novel, but it felt comforting and easy to enjoy. Really liked the life imitating art aspects and the rich characters. Fabienne is a challenging force right from the start, Fabienne and Lumir are a source of tension and emotion, and all the side characters incl Ethan Hawke in a crazy hat provide contrasting joy and humor. “He asked to be a turtle again” Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review dave d Clearly some big names wanted to work with Hirokazu Kore-eda in this film within a film, but the result was a major letdown after Kore-eda's Shoplifters, a feature adored by most. Ethan Hawke is wasted and while Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche are given moments to shine, one thing becomes more clear as the film meanders: The whole is way less than the sum of the parts. This was the first venture outside of Japan for Kore-eda, so there is plenty of room for growth. And what exactly is truth? Final Score: 5/10 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/24/24 Full Review Laura T A lovely story that somehow feels fresh even though its basically a French All About Eve. The cast are wonderful and such talented actors that the film takes on a meta quality as they act out being normal people on a movie set. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/07/23 Full Review isla s This is a fairly subtle film, which I found (I feel bad for saying this) somewhat dull in parts. I tend to like a good family drama but this film felt a little bit long drawn out and while some secrets told were interesting, it didn't grab my attention for long really, although I suppose it is somewhat thought provoking. The cast do give good performances and I like some of the camerawork. I thought it was ironic seeing the scenes where the mum is acting on set, with actors playing her family, knowing her real relatives were nearby and wondering things. Overall I'd say this is an ok film but not one I'd actively recommend, no. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The film that, finally, made me connect one hundred with the cinema of the Japanese Koreeda, The truth remains a deep, beautiful and conciliatory meditation on motherhood, family and the traumas of the past. Its cast could not be better, with performances so natural that it could well be the recording of a family reunion in which the complexity of the protagonists is finally revealed and forgiveness arrives.
