Glenn Kenny New York Times This gangly picture isn’t a lost masterpiece, to be clear. But it’s a magnetic curio, a fascinating relic of a vanished strain of European cinema. Mar 1, 2022 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Comic book styled Cold War '60s spy spoof that is funny but menacing. Rated: A Dec 2, 2023 Full Review Serge Daney Cahiers du Cinéma Jean-Louis Roy's overt ambition to make a comic-strip [is] courageous. But it is strange that no one asked the question of whether the comic strip, when translated to the screen, loses its essential charm (if only that of being drawn). Oct 3, 2023 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com An odd little gem which reflects its own unique sparkle. Rated: 3/5 Oct 3, 2023 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills A unique and inventive oddity among all its era’s sendups of international espionage action. Oct 3, 2023 Full Review Oscar Goff Boston Hassle With its snide wit and all-encompassing nihilism, Shandigor has aged better than many of the films it satirizes -- and, if nothing else, it contains infinitely more chanson. Audience Member The Unknown Man of Shandigor is a beautiful surrealist movie. The score is terrific, some of the actors are brilliant, and the cinematography is just fantastic. The new restored version looks so good, and the shots of the villa and the stone buildings and walls of Shandigor are particularly stunning. Many of the scenes are funny, but the plot overall doesn't hold up to scrutiny. I kept trying to make sense of what was going on-- it's possible that things would at least make sense upon more viewings, but I concluded that the nuclear canceler and subsequent spy capers were just an excuse for the rest of the film. I particularly enjoyed the performance of Marie-France Boyer. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews
