[It] doesn't do much to distinguish itself from the hundreds of other horror flicks that are based on a concept that people are trapped somewhere by evil forces. There are too many over-used clichés ... and the character development is non-existent. Go to Full Review

The Village In The Woods is easily recognised as a first film, one whose creators were learning on the job, and despite a few effective moments it just doesn't hang together. Go to Full Review

Jonathan P 12/21/2023 I actually really rather liked this movie. I've always been a bit of a fan of old school cinema like The Wicker Man and things like that. I like the atmosphere and many of the shots were beautifully composed. The score is a highlight of this film as it doesn't overbear the movie but more supports it in this creepy way. There's like a rumble running through the whole thing which is subtle but very much heard on my surround sound system. I thought Beth Park was fantastic as Nicky. She really conveys an innocence that is rare to see in these movies at this budget level which I gather was low budget. Yep it's good. I'd watch it again for sure. They did a great job with that and the music and sound they put to it was also very good along with the visual effects. It just needed more happening as it eventually dragged so you were waiting for it to end when you knew nothing more was coming. This was at about an hour for me and it's only one hour 20 minutes total. The faces they cast were great, all adding to the "old" style of the gothic horror though it seems to take place in current times. There's nothing new to the story and much is unexplained or not believable, just rely on your imagination and history of old films with similar storylines. I liked the gothic-style old time mood they created and that's what held my attention overall. See more 02/06/2022 Very dull and slow. 30 mins in and nothing happened at all. Very ham acting. If could find mouse would change See more 11/21/2021 It beats movies like Sator and The Dark and the Wicked for me. It controls tone and creepiness beautifully. It's a polarising movie. I'm on the love it side of things. If you don't like atmospheric slow burn movies and require shed loads of blood, gore and repeated tropes this one isn't for you. It's the thinking persons horror and I like that. See more 11/07/2021 dull, routine pagan story See more 10/25/2021 I was surprised by the sheer artistic delivery of this movie. It's a sort of ode to 70's cinema but also has a modern energy too. First and foremost there is an incredible amount of foreboding atmosphere running through every moment in this. I have no idea how director, Raine McCormack create such a thing but he did and it's something sorely missing from modern cinema at present. All performances are solid and well delivered. Of special note, Hope and Bradley make good of their sparse but effective characters. But I'll say again the one thing that really stuck me was the amazing build of tension in every moment. On my third viewing I gleamed the subtleties that are present and there are many. McCormack also penned the music which is in of itself a major achievement. The closing piece is nostalgic which just goes perfectly with the end tone. I truly think that given time and more movies from the director this one will turn out to be a cult hit. If McCormack can create this on a show string budget wearing numerous production hats then I'm excited to see what comes next from him. See more Read all reviews
