Robert E. Sherwood LIFE In my estimation, The Volga Boatman is the best picture that Cecil B. De Mille has made. It possesses more of the De Mille virtues and fewer of the De Mille faults than any example of the Master's work that has appeared since Joan the Woman. Oct 6, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member William Boyd (same guy as Hopalong Cassidy) plays THE VOLGA BOATMAN (1926), a member of the Red Party who falls in love with Princess Vera, on the cusp of the Russian Revolution. Although DeMille was extremely anti-communist, this movie's sympathies lay with the people oppressed under the Tsarists. One of my very favorite silent films - very good.
