The Wandering Earth's story won't win many points for originality, but this sci-fi epic earns its thrills with exciting set pieces and dazzling special effects.

David Ehrlich indieWire It's almost impressive how Gwo manages to rip off "Gravity," "Sunshine," and "2001," all at the same time. Rated: D+ May 14, 2019 Full Review Karen Han Polygon It's exactly the mix of cheesy and crowd-pleasing that you'd expect from a blockbuster, with eye-popping CGI sci-fi set dressing to give it a little extra oomph. May 14, 2019 Full Review Matthew Monagle Austin Chronicle Critics well-versed in the relationship between state and cinema will undoubtedly have a lot to say about those themes, but this should not detract from the fact that, as a piece of broad entertainment, there is plenty to enjoy. May 14, 2019 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It’s impossible not to mention the familiar tropes and second-hand characters. But this is science-fiction escapism at its very best. Rated: 4/5 Aug 21, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The movie follows a rather outmoded model of large-scale disaster movies that have fallen out of fashion in Hollywood. Rated: 2/4 Mar 4, 2022 Full Review Nicolás Delgadillo Discussing Film The Wandering Earth isn't especially deep, but it's an explosive achievement of filmmaking Rated: 4 / 5 Jun 25, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Gregor J Wasted opportunity While the setting would leave a lot of space to tell stories about social conflict and other interesting aspects, the filmmakers decided to resort to a standard action plot. Granted, set pieces and effects are well done, but for me the result remains uninteresting, especially regarding the potential of the premise. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review Ken N I liked it, good special effect, and an ORIGINAL story. I think this is the only movie I've seen where the USA didn't rescue the world, it was a group effect by humanity! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review Meng Y Thank you Director Guo Fan for producing such a good science fiction movie with a very limited budget. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Jonathan K The concept is very cool (same source material author as the Three Body Problem). The tone though is a bit silly. I think it's probably part of a Chinese cultural comedic style that I don't get -- a sort of slapstick over-the-top exaggeration -- much like there is a certain Japanese style of drama found in anime that doesn't totally resonate with me... but I watch with enjoyment nonetheless. The CGI is great and the action is high energy. It's an enjoyable way to spend a couple hours if you are a sci-fi fan. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/07/24 Full Review Merijn K How ridiculous impossible the whole fantasy off it is, this movie turns out to be actually a thrilling adventure. Saving the earth from an external threat like the sun is actually contradictory to what it really is, life on earth depends on the sun and the threat comes from greed on this planet. To be united against greed would be more desirable nowadays. But morality aside, this movie is worth the watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/28/24 Full Review Yuan G I watched it 5 times. Each time it makes it a more entertaining and more interesting. If you don't have the life experience of Chinese heroism and or trained in Chinese mythology, you might have difficulty to savour the subtleties of the narrative. By the way, I am M.A. in Chinese studies and well versed in traditional Chinese literature and ancient archive. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
