      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Lacking the hallmarks of his best work, The Ward proves to be a disappointingly mundane swan song for director John Carpenter.

Ionela C This movie made me wanted to read psychological thrillers books. Loved the twist of this one Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review Marina D The only good thing about this movie were the jumpscares. The rest was just plain bad. That one girl carrying the bunny and making the baby sounds was EXTREMELY annoying. They tried to make her cute but it didn't work at all. I guess the ending was kinda cool but it wasn't worth watching the whole thing. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/16/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a highly under-appreciated Carpenter classic that I think is long due for a re-appraisal. Carpenter, as always, works his old school magic in it and the cast, led by Amber Heard, do their best to make it the classic that it is. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers and horror, you'll definitely want to see this one at least once in your life. And oh, I assure you that you'll never predict how it ends. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Jimmy P This is the only film that Carpenter ever made that I didn't like. It is terrible. It's Carpenter painting by numbers. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Cute-teen-girl psych ward? Where they physically kill a "ghost" with an axe? HORRENDOUS. Avoid at all costs. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Liam D While it has a great supporting cast the lead is not very interesting, the twist is ripped off from another better movie and for his last movie John Carpenter (Happy!, Zoo) feels weirdly out of his element Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/03/22 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

William Goss Film.com An aggressively plain spook story that favors jump moments over sustained tension and winds up falling back on a particularly tired twist. Jul 11, 2011 Full Review Scott Tobias NPR Carpenter has made his approximation of a cheap, twisty, shock-filled modern horror movie, and he has lost all but faint sighs of his minimalist swagger in the process. Jul 8, 2011 Full Review Joe Neumaier New York Daily News Carpenter's economical but mundane chiller is possessed more by previous ghoul-friend flicks than it is by his better work. Rated: 1/5 Jul 8, 2011 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review A far cry from Carpenter’s glory days. Rated: 2/4 Mar 11, 2023 Full Review Shelagh Rowan-Legg That Shelf The problem with Carpenter is that...he is too good for this kind of material. No one has mastered it better than he has, and while he certainly doesn't "phone it in," so to speak, this kind of film doesn't present enough of a challenge for him. May 15, 2018 Full Review Fernando F. Croce MUBI The result is a trim, scrubbed work, as strange and distilled as a mid-1930s Tod Browning chiller. Dec 15, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews
