Critics Consensus

Heavy on eerie mood but undone by an obtuse script, The Watchers can only hold the gaze for so long before tedium sets in.

Dakota Fanning doesn’t disappoint in The Watchers delivering a grounded and compelling performance – even if the film’s meandering, atmospheric storytelling doesn’t quite return the favor.

The Watchers is not nearly as cerebral; it's less a political (or showbiz) allegory than a fable about our shared capacity for change. It's a theme that's ultimately addressed so plangently that it has the opposite effect and borders on goofiness... Go to Full Review

It’s not a terrible movie, but it’s not great either. As they say in the old country, The Shyamalan doesn’t fall far from the tree. This film suffers from some of the same on-the nose dialogue and an overreliance on exposition to tell the story. Go to Full Review

While the film leans on some familiar tropes — such as the mysterious forest and the enigmatic force guiding the protagonist — its strongest element is the pervasive sense of mystery that underpins the story. Go to Full Review

Rodney B Dec 4 It's a good debut for M. Night's daughter. If it would have ended after the first hour it would have been better. The last half hour felt tacked on and unnecessary which dragged the movie down.
