Critics Consensus

The Weekend Away makes for a painless enough home viewing experience, but Leighton Meester's performance deserved a better film.

Author Sarah Alderson adapted her own novel, and the screenplay is made slick with clues, dead-ends and sinful temptations that don’t materialize to much. Go to Full Review

Fast-moving enough to provide a decent night’s disposable home entertainment for viewers whose expectations aren’t geared any higher. Go to Full Review

Not a bad little number, this, well-directed to the genre template by Kim Farrant and with an excellent supporting performance by Luke Norris as Beth's husband Rob. His scene on the phone is a mini-masterclass in emotionally authentic acting. Go to Full Review

Based on a Sarah Alderson novel, this trashy little Netflix whodunnit starring Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester as the innocent American in the wrong place at the wrong time is, well, a film that’s almost deliberately unoriginal. Go to Full Review

Maria B @RT02265209 Jul 12 First of all, the color grading is horrific. All the characters are gray and sickly looking, which made it hard to pay attention to the movie. Second of all, Sarah truly needs to get out of the writer's room because that plot was all over the place. At no point did I know what was going to happen next. From the beginning, it looked like a cheap Tubi movie. Then things only got worse. I think almost every character was arrested at least once only to be let go just because they claimed they were innocent, which is a critique of the lack of logic in this script. Not to mention the taxi driver who gave off creep vibes the whole movie, only to be part of an Albanian gang and end up as the love interest. Oh and she talked about her baby the whole movie despite having practically abandoned the child and not pumped her breast milk once. See more Delle T. @thedelletorres May 31 The Weekend Away feels like the modern Netflix version of a pulpy airport thriller novel: easy to consume, occasionally ridiculous, but entertaining enough to keep you watching until the end. If you enjoy movies like Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train, just with lower stakes and more vacation-postcard scenery, it’s a decent watch. It works as lightweight suspense entertainment rather than a deeply sophisticated mystery See more Leandro t @LeandrosTavares Jan 18 This is by far one of the worst movies I have ever watched in my life. The casting is absolutely awful—borderline pathetic. I honestly cannot believe how bad the script is. It’s filled with stupid reactions and nonsensical decisions by almost every character, especially the taxi driver, whose involvement makes absolutely no sense at all. There are so many things wrong with this movie that I wouldn’t even know where to begin breaking them down. Do yourself a favor and stay far away from this crap. I really liked the cast and I am becoming a big fan of Leighton Meester. The movie does a great job showcasing Croatia. I thought it had a surprising amount of depth and I would say it was well crafted. Very entertaining! See more Read all reviews
