What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Weekend Away makes for a painless enough home viewing experience, but Leighton Meester's performance deserved a better film.

Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News Author Sarah Alderson adapted her own novel, and the screenplay is made slick with clues, dead-ends and sinful temptations that don’t materialize to much. Rated: 1.5/4 Mar 10, 2022 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review A large glass of white wine on a Friday night. Mar 9, 2022 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety Fast-moving enough to provide a decent night’s disposable home entertainment for viewers whose expectations aren’t geared any higher. Mar 4, 2022 Full Review Rebecca Johnson Film Focus Online It's plot will keep you invested even if you do guess most of the twists along the way. Just don't expect too much from the script, however well the actors manage to elevate it. Rated: 2/5 Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Jim Schembri jimschembri.com Not a bad little number, this, well-directed to the genre template by Kim Farrant and with an excellent supporting performance by Luke Norris as Beth's husband Rob. His scene on the phone is a mini-masterclass in emotionally authentic acting. Rated: 3/5 Oct 30, 2022 Full Review Rahul Desai News9 Live (India) Based on a Sarah Alderson novel, this trashy little Netflix whodunnit starring Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester as the innocent American in the wrong place at the wrong time is, well, a film that’s almost deliberately unoriginal. andrea c Thriller d'azione che parte con alta dose di divertimento e di sensualità ma che ben presto si tramuta in un incubo ad occhi aperti per la protagonista a cui sembra vada tutto storto. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Jeffrey P Uninteresting develops into a mildly interesting before concluding with a thud. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/28/24 Full Review Goran G Why movies like this one are even made anymore?! It's like 10000 other movies with the same story and execution. It's so unoriginal and uninspiring it just hurts :) Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/16/24 Full Review no w Sooooo i liked it, could have been better for sure for some reasons : - it should have been longer - should have deepen the characters And the acting was pretty great except, and it kills me to say it, for Meester : she was good most of the time but for raw deep emotions or even just surprise that wasn't it, i couldn't detached myself from her performance as an actor and had trouble connecting with her character, it wasn't believable for me so it's a shame. I am glad i didn't read the book before end because i would have been more disappointed probably. I think the movie was fine and the cast was really good, especially the roles of Kate (real great), Zain (amazing) and Rob (really good), the creepy landlord was pretty well played too. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/30/24 Full Review Manali Parag J It's fantastic, fast paced suspence thriller. Must watch movie. Lead roles - specifically Leighton Meester - is excellent. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Terry H I guess I'm starting to get out of touch with critics and audience tastes. Surprised this is rated as low as it is. For the genre, I thought they did a good job. I liked it. Kept me guessing what really happened. The last twist was probably one too many though. Should have ended it the scene before. But all in all, it was an enjoyable watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
