Critics Consensus

With a rehashed plot and unimpressive animation, there's nothing wild about The Wild.

Derek Adams Time Out The animation here impresses more than in the equally defunct Madagascar, but everything else smacks of an easy money-making exercise of such dimwitted inanity even the youngest kids will see through it. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Helen O'Hara Empire Magazine The Wild roars back from a rocky opening act to a storming last reel, just managing to claw its way above comparisons with Madagascar. Rated: 3/5 May 26, 2006 Full Review Neil Smith BBC.com What's so aggravating here is the grievous lack of wit, imagination and plain old story. Rated: 2/5 May 23, 2006 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com It's frightening to me to think that a group of studio executives sat around a room and green-lighted this film. Muhammad A This movie is a cultural icon, and is very slept on and swept under. People are quick to mention Madagascar and people try make comparisons of who’s better or etc, but in my opinion, just enjoy em man. As a kid it made me cry and as an adult it still makes me laugh. The animation style still lives up to, if not, is better than today’s quality, the soundtrack is superb and the storyline is one that grabs your heartstrings. If you can’t see the brilliance of this movie then I wonder what sad lif you must live. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review Audience Member This is so much better than Pets on a Train indeed! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/06/25 Full Review Dylan C Even if you ignore the obvious Madagascar parallels, this movie is just bad. The cast is stacked for the mid 90s but they don't have much to do. Eddie Izzard is by and far the best part of this movie, they've got a very loose improvisational delivery that is delightful to watch. Everyone else is certainly...there. There's also a weird amount of Lion King references and parallels that only serve to remind the audience of a much better movie they could be watching instead. Not much happens in this movie and yet it's jarringly paced. The squirrel played by Jim Belushi spends most of the film sexually harassing a giraffe. The inciting incident in this film is a bizarre curling scene and the plot just kind of happens to you haphazardly from there. It's difficult to talk about this film in a sequential way, because it's so all over the place. Basically Eddie Izzard as Nigel is the only reason to watch this movie. Seriously, just watch Madagascar. It's not good either, but at least it's memorable.
