The Wind Rises is a fittingly bittersweet swan song for director Hayao Miyazaki.

J. Hoberman ARTINFO.com I don't doubt the sincerity of Miyazaki's pacifism but I'm appalled by his abstract vision. Like, how many tens or hundreds of thousands of real people in Asia and the Pacific were de-animated thanks to [Jiro] Horikoshi's dreams? Feb 22, 2019 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online A beautiful--and now Oscar-nominated--swan song from Miyazaki, The Wind Rises is a breathtaking ode to what is and what could be. Rated: A- Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Andrew Osmond Sight & Sound It's Miyazaki's most atypical cartoon, yet it might be his most personal self-representation, a portrait of the artist as a myopic dreamer. May 13, 2014 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine If there is a problem with the film, it’s in the manner in which Miyazaki seems to side-step broader issues about Japanese imperialism and World War II. Rated: 7/10 Sep 23, 2024 Full Review Ankit Ojha Cinema Elite “The Wind Rises” is, fortunately, the perfect sum of each of its specific, lovingly crafted aspects. Rated: 4.5/5 Jul 20, 2024 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand The entire film is beautiful in a way that is unique to old-school hand-drawn animation and Miyazaki applies his visual imagination to a realistic drama, giving it the romanticized imagery of Jiro’s hopeful perspective... Jay W Going into "The Wind Rises" I had some worries. I thought that the idea of a historical drama about the man who engineers airplanes would not be interesting enough to justify a 2-hour runtime. Well, if you were worried about that, you can put those fears to rest, the movie is riveting. Like all Studio Ghibli films, the animation is beautiful. There are dream sequences where Miyazaki can really play with the art style. All the details he adds to each scene is breathtaking. Even the simple flare he adds to the glasses of the main character adds so much to the charm of the picture. The voice acting by all the characters is top notch. If I had one nitpick it would be Joseph Gordon Levitt as Jiro. His whole performance stays within the same monotone delivery. Most of the time it works for the character, but there are some emotional moments where he falls short. The music by Joe Hisaishi is awesome, it would be a good soundtrack to listen to on its own. What I find at the core of this film is Jiro's passion for his work. His unrelenting desire to engineer a better airplane. He is able to take something that I would normally have little interest in and make it fascinating. As much as he loves engineering those planes, there may be something he loves even more. And that is the heart and soul of this movie. Yes, the movie could have used its time better, could have had some tighter editing. But in the end, this is another great hit for Miyazaki. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Mateo B This movie tells the story of Jiro Horikoshi a boy fascinated by the dream of flight but unfortunately he is nearsighted and will never be able to fly so instead he used his love of aircraft to invent aircraft for Mitsubishi. This movie is beautiful from the dream sequences where Jiro talks with Caproni a aircraft inventor to his relationship with his wife. The wind rises is a beating film that I strongly encourage you to watch, from it’s beautiful hand drawn animation from studio Ghibli that shows that 2d animation can still hold it’s own against 3D animation with every moment making the characters feel alive so that even background characters that are only on scene for a short moment are given as much love and dedication as the main characters having there own unique moments and actions that fill up the scene and make the movie feel alive. It is not only the beautiful animation that makes this movie stand out but also the amazing composition by Joe Hisaishi who’s music invoices wind and flight. This movie is a must-see I strongly recommend you watch it, you will not be disappointed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/28/24 Full Review Noe G The wind rises was an amazing and fantastic studio Ghibli movie and my rating is a 10/10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Pengyu Z a true love story in a turbulent time, first time they met , last time naoko wave hand to say goodbey to Jiro , when kayo busrt out cries for naoko's silent departure , when Jiro stand still gazing into the distance realizing something might happend to his other half , their love however deep, it just can't beat illness nor war... Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review Thomas P This movie was amazing. I have always loved movies set in WW1, WW2, and in between. So this movie was perfect. I absolutely loved the characters and the planes in this movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review Nikhil K While an immersive and charming cinematic experience, this film may fail to captivate a significant portion of its audience, leaving them disengaged and uninterested Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews
