Yvon L A well-made thriller: suspenseful and original plot, solid acting, incredible cinematography, fitting music. A first for the director? I can't wait to see what's next. Not sure what the audience had for supper before watching this film… should have taken Pepto Bismol. There's a good reason critics gave it a 80% fresh rating. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/15/23 Full Review Greg S Agree with the critics, it's a so-so film. Emma Mackey stands out as a self-centered, controlling, evil BI taking advantage of Anson Boon's naivety to the max to cover up her crime. Overall, easy to see the ending about 2/3 of the time through. However, it doesn't end as one might expect, but the so-so acting and boring story line leads one to say "who cares". Suggest skipping this one. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Theo Swift The story, plot is okay but should be developed better. The Holly character played a good role but the Tom character was pretty bad acting, very little dialogue. Maybe I'm out of touch, do kids really treat their parents this bad, so much disrespect! That part is sad to see, even portrayed as acting. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/05/22 Full Review Audience Member Believe they could do best. And also was so dark, needed more light . only hear voices and had to imagine what was on. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member While it was a slow building drama. I thought I'd was beautifully filmed. Some may say it was a predictable ending but that's the comfort in a common thriller. Acting was brilliant. Truly enjoyable film. Steve Rose Guardian There's promise here but also perhaps some uncertainty: ultimately it falls between the stools of realist rural drama and full-on horror. Rated: 2/5 Mar 10, 2021 Full Review Rebecca Johnson Film Focus Online The focus on character development and emotions is what makes the movie shine, as well as hosting beautiful visuals and sound. Rated: 3/5 Aug 6, 2023 Full Review Emma Simmonds Radio Times While the dialogue is uninspired, the plot is an interesting exercise in noir-ish duplicity, and culminates in a tense showdown. Rated: 3/5 Apr 5, 2023 Full Review Heidy Morales Hye's Musings Although some dislike its slow pace, The Winter Lake does not disappoint. From the setting, sound design, casting, and cinematography, Sheerin's directorial debut contains all the elements of a good movie. Rated: 3/5 Aug 1, 2021 Full Review Carey-Ann Pawsey Orca Sound A mystery to be revealed. Revealed it will be piece by piece. Getting more and more ominous as the film advances. Rated: 3/5 Jul 12, 2021 Full Review Anne Brodie What She Said [An] effectively claustrophobic debut feature. Jun 22, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews
