Critics Consensus

Suitably grand and special effects-laden, The Wolfman suffers from a suspense-deficient script and a surprising lack of genuine chills.

Sure, it's more sinister and gory (ridiculously so at times), but Del Toro's acting is a standout. Go to Full Review

When the beast finally bursts forth, the character becomes, for the most part, a digitally augmented blur - there's no room for a performance underneath all the 0s and 1s. Go to Full Review

As for the epic battle pitting werewolf versus werewolf -- let’s just say it couldn’t be any less frightening had the filmmakers elected to pit Pekingese against Poodle. Go to Full Review

…better than a dire reputation suggests; it’s clearly a loving attempt to revise a classic story, with top talent all on message, and a few neat moments for genre fans to enjoy, even if the final wolf-on-wolf fight is risible… Go to Full Review

Where the film suffers is its lack of involvement in the crucial levels of emotion and suspense, the driving forces of the original film. Had those essential elements of the story been developed further, this would be an effortless recommendation. Go to Full Review

Xane B. @xabobinchuck 2d The CGI is really really bad, but I still enjoy this movie for all its flaws See more Christopher C. @Genesisfix 3d The acting is tepid, boring and hackneyed. The script is worse than insulting. The whole film seems like a mashup of bad cliches illustrated by dopamine addicted CGI artists. Ranks as one of the dumbest attempts at a refresh I can imagine. Emily Blount might as well have been a Claymation figure, and Benicio Del Toro had the look of a man coming off a bout of c.diff. No originality, and the whole thing played more like a video game than cinema. See more Frans B @FransB Nov 14 Loved it. Very well written and brought to screen by Joe Johnston.
