Critics Consensus

Although its final act succumbs to the usual cartoonish antics, The Wolverine is one superhero movie that manages to stay true to the comics while keeping casual viewers entertained.

Stephen L "The Wolverine" strips the character down to his core, delivering a more intimate and restrained take on the clawed mutant’s journey. Hugh Jackman once again embodies Logan with grit and vulnerability, while the film’s Japanese setting adds a refreshing change of pace. The action is brutal and well-choreographed, and for much of its runtime, the film embraces a more character-driven approach. Though the third act leans into more generic blockbuster elements, "The Wolverine" remains a strong, thoughtful entry in the X-Men franchise that stands apart from its predecessors. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/15/25 Full Review Kacper S I enjoyed the film. I think that it is a great movie. Hugh Jackman really killed it as the wolverine. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Mason M This movie is incredibly overrated. I was so bored whilst watching the film. It lacks story and it’s just a sad excuse to make more money off of Hugh Jackman. I cannot recommend this movie to any viewers. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review Rick C I think The Wolverine is the last X-Men movie I watched before losing track of the franchise, so I'm interested to see where the story goes from here. This movie seems to pick up where X-Men: The Last Stand left off, with a conflicted Logan coming to terms with the death of the married woman he lusted after for three movies. The Wolverine has some memorable moments, such as the bullet train fight sequence, but overall presents a very formulaic narrative. Once again, the producers relied on Hugh Jackman's Wolverine to carry audiences through the runtime. Simply stated, it's duller than I remember and I actually enjoy X-Men Origins: Wolverine more despite that movie's many, many flaws. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Rafael B As Logan its Wolverine great finale (Deadpool doesn't count), and Origins its biggest fail, The Wolverine is a more personified version of the comics. It is the most loyal, but does not hold the bur to the end, unfortunately. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review alan g Fast paced and a lot of action must really just an excuse for Hugh Jackman to take off his shirt.
