Richard Crouse Richard Crouse What begins as a document of a court case and its countersuits turns into something more important, more vital, as it underlines how Indigenous artists, even world-famous ones, have been exploited. Rated: 4/5 Jan 31, 2021 Full Review Courtney Small That Shelf There Are No Fakes is a haunting portrait of greed, class and the horrors that can arise when art is only viewed through a monetary lens. Feb 1, 2020 Full Review Alison Gillmor Winnipeg Free Press Kastner gives a glimpse of the largely unregulated global art market, with only a hazy legal framework for dealing with frauds and forgeries and lots of convenient myths that obscure the connections among art, money and power. Rated: 4/5 Aug 19, 2019 Full Review Dorothy Woodend The Tyee (British Columbia) There are enough plot twists jammed into this neo-Darwinian, Dickensian tale to supply a couple films or novels. Jun 21, 2019 Full Review Ken Eisner Georgia Straight There's no denying that Kastner has a nose for things that helped define who we were and, sadly, are. Jun 12, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member What starts off as a question of the authenticity of a painting spirals into an exploration of fraud by the dealers, harassment of completely innocent people by some buyers desperate to keep the values up, and ultimately the depths of human depravity. An amazing piece of work. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review paul m Really good, just a little too long in my opinion. 2nd half could have been edited down considerably. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member What an amazing story, and a riveting film - so well documented, one of the best films I've seen. My heart goes out to all the people who were put through so much in the course of getting to the truth of this matter, and for those who were so courageous in their sharing to illuminate the depths of the horror that took place.... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member This is one of those documentaries that leads you down one path, then takes a sharp right turn into something else. I would have loved to have gotten a bit more, and maybe earlier, into Gary Lamont's backstory - maybe with interviews with others from his life, or others he affected - but overall, I think this film did an excellent job fleshing out a weirdly specific corner in the world of art forgery, and in this case, a whole lot of seedy characters on all sides of it. Although he enters the film later, for me, Dallas Thompson is the star of the whole story - someone for whom you're cheering through all he's telling and someone whose courage in exposing others' horrendous acts feels almost palpable. Worth the watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Read all reviews
