      Critics Consensus

Conceptually strong but uneven in execution, There's Something Wrong with the Children is a serviceable horror movie that could have been much more.

FernRater Very horrible story. This "horror film" did not bring much to the table. The movie started slow for the first 25 minutes then it started to become more confusing by the second. I do not have enough words to describe how horrible the viewing experience was. Absolute garbage. Fern out. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review Kendall V This is one of the worse movies I have ever seen in my life. Like I'm legit offended and annoyed I wasted an hour and a half of my life. The four lead actors were wooden. They spoke their lines. Not acted. I've seen more riveting performance in a middle school drama class. The child actors actually are better than the adults. The first half of the movie Just throws 2 couples at us. It's literally all talking. One couple is having some sort of marital issues. In one scene they are snippy then throw very next they are fine. And then the next they are snippy again. When you find out why they are frustrated it just comes off as superficial. The other couple seems normal yet the movie has to force drama between the two that would make the movie better if they expanded on it. Instead we have 4 characters who are 1 dimensional and a lot of telling not showing. They have zero character development and they literally are boring. The Second half dealt with the fallout from their hike on the kids. Tensions start flaring up yet tvd characters are so bland and written so terribly I really don't care for any of them. The direction and writing were terrible. There's no explanation on the big bad. You come out from the end confused. The ending made no sense and was so rushed. This movie could have used an extra 30 mins to flesh out the characters. The child actors are the only good think about this movie. I'm so disappointed Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Federico D Two words: lost potential. Still a fun watch. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review Captain C I have never seen movie of children going bad. Quite good! A bit boring some times but the movie in general is well made. With the quality of this movie it looks more like a 2014 movie but it doesn't really bother me. The beginning might be slow but going to the end it becomes quite epic. I recommend this movie! 🍿 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Adni e Gu G A classic trash movie by blumhouse. I really like it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/24 Full Review Terry S A little disjointed in parts but better than average in my opinion. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Noel Murray Los Angeles Times There’s something wrong with the children, all right. The filmmakers can’t figure out what to do with them. Jan 20, 2023 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News Director Roxanne Benjamin never allows Children to overstay its welcome, resulting in a scare package worth seeking out. Rated: 3/4 Jan 18, 2023 Full Review Christian Zilko indieWire There’s Something Wrong with the Children punches above its weight by doing all the little things right. T.J. Cimfel and David White’s script is built like a Swiss watch, setting up countless twists without ever wasting a line. Rated: A- Jan 18, 2023 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine It is a shame Benjamin did not lean further into these more inventive elements, as it would have certainly made for a more distinctive and unusual movie. Rated: 6/10 Aug 14, 2023 Full Review John Serba Decider The movie may frustrate the hardcore blood-and-guts audience for taking too long to wind up the plot and not delivering the splatter, but it also isn’t “elevated” enough to tickle the fancy of the A24 dweebs. Jun 20, 2023 Full Review Jordy Sirkin Jordy Reviews It Though it doesn’t do anything spectacularly different with its setting, in the end it delivers something amusing and reminiscent of cult B movies.
