The employees of New York City's Odyssey Detective Agency can't seem to prevent themselves from getting over-involved in their clients' lives. When aging gumshoe John Russo (Ben Gazzara) is assigned to trail an Italian millionaire's wife, Angela (Audrey Hepburn), he inevitably falls for her continental charm. Alain E @AlainE Jul 20 An interesting experience. Not much of a story. Just an excuse to have an interplay of actors that Boghdanovich liked. RT must really like Audrey Hepburn because they use a picture from her youth. Colleen Camp on the other hand was super cute as she appears in the movie, but they chose a much later picture. This is of course the last on screen evidence for Dorothy Stratten who was brutally murdered by her husband before the film was released, and her pictures tragically will never age beyond 20. Very nice night cinematography from Robby Mueller who first became known working for Wim Wenders. And a commonly misspelled Greek last name -polous instead of-poulos (Leondopolous). The beautiful taxi driver is the future Ms Keith Richards. See more Ivory J May 24 This movie was painfully terrible. Just awful. Bogdanovich allowed his obsession with Dorothy to overshadow his professional judgment. The writing was awful & the acting was worse. Gazzara seemed bored & arrogant, John Ritter was just off in his comedic timing, Hepburn was boring & the rest of the cast was just lost in a completely pointless story. See more Brent A @BrentAprill 11/24/2024 10% rating ... Very dull and flat storyline with very little appeal. See more Blu B 09/28/2024 It's interesting. A group of P.I.'s fall in love with clients, each other, and others in a Robert Altman style multi character driven story. Very ambitious and highly original setup. The results almost work. It blends humor, romance, and drama in a easy enough to follow narrative for each person particulary Gazzara and Ritter who are the two main lines. The NYC setting is memorable and no one really blends in. Camp, Hepburn, and Gazzara are solid and the best of the cast. Camp reminds me of a young Winona Ryder in this. Everyone else isn't bad. Ritter is a awkward Clark Kent type who isn't bad but never really feels fleshed out. The country music of Camp is suprisngly good and in general the soundtrack is the best part. Everything here is half decent. If I can point to the main problem is that it feels jumpy and slow in chunks especially the first half. You think this is going to be about two unrelated guys chasing the girl and it plays out as nothing special at first. Once it's revealed they know each other and work at the agency it gets interesting and becomes quite interesting seeing everyone together. Than it goes back to individual storylines that work but never feel like there apart of something bigger or fit together. Feels more just like people passing in the night if that makes sense. The characters are interesting, the direction isn't half bad, and each story line is interesting how it ends and is pretty light hearted overall. But again, it never feels like it adds up to anything and the direction, dialouge, and scenes themselves isn't anything like Pulp Fiction to justify a "It's not about the destination but the journey getting there" idea. It's original and interesting but it needed to go somewhere in the grand scheme. Anyone who is a hardcore fan of the director or any actors in this may want to check this out.
