Fernando F. Croce Slant Magazine The film is a delicately staged roundelay of intertwined pursuit. Blu B It's interesting. A group of P.I.'s fall in love with clients, each other, and others in a Robert Altman style multi character driven story. Very ambitious and highly original setup. The results almost work. It blends humor, romance, and drama in a easy enough to follow narrative for each person particulary Gazzara and Ritter who are the two main lines. The NYC setting is memorable and no one really blends in. Camp, Hepburn, and Gazzara are solid and the best of the cast. Camp reminds me of a young Winona Ryder in this. Everyone else isn't bad. Ritter is a awkward Clark Kent type who isn't bad but never really feels fleshed out. The country music of Camp is suprisngly good and in general the soundtrack is the best part. Everything here is half decent. If I can point to the main problem is that it feels jumpy and slow in chunks especially the first half. You think this is going to be about two unrelated guys chasing the girl and it plays out as nothing special at first. Once it's revealed they know each other and work at the agency it gets interesting and becomes quite interesting seeing everyone together. Than it goes back to individual storylines that work but never feel like there apart of something bigger or fit together. Feels more just like people passing in the night if that makes sense. The characters are interesting, the direction isn't half bad, and each story line is interesting how it ends and is pretty light hearted overall. But again, it never feels like it adds up to anything and the direction, dialouge, and scenes themselves isn't anything like Pulp Fiction to justify a "It's not about the destination but the journey getting there" idea. It's original and interesting but it needed to go somewhere in the grand scheme. Anyone who is a hardcore fan of the director or any actors in this may want to check this out. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review David T What a sweet, quirky, charming movie! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/24/24 Full Review lionel b Like the references to the H Hawk s Big sleep movie - The cab scene with Gazzara and the female taxi driver that recalls Bogart s scene with Joy Barlow/ John Ritter s character called *Rutledge* which happens to be Bacall s character name in the Big sleep / The private agency is known to be they never sleep / Gazzara calls Hepburn steve which was the name Bogart called Bacall ... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/24 Full Review Alec B It really does have a spontaneous energy (no doubt influenced by how it was made) that is rather infectious. Also you can see how this was so influential on the likes of Wes Anderson. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/24 Full Review ERF Terribly silly plot. The movie seemed like an excuse for the director to put his girlfriend on screen. He even made John Ritter look like him with the glasses and the hair. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/12/23 Full Review delysid d i didn't like this long and pointless story, but i'm no big fan of romance in general Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/26/22 Full Review Read all reviews
