Critics Consensus

They Came Together is surprisingly messy and perhaps too smart for its own good, but Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd's chemistry is enough to overcome many of the movie's flaws.

They Came Together is over-the-top stupid, in the most exuberant, silliest and, yet smartest of ways... but you'll only enjoy it if you get it, much like Airplane! and other classic goofball parodies. Go to Full Review

It's still possible to make a spoof movie that is biting, merciless, clever, and (most importantly) uproariously funny. Go to Full Review

Rom-com tropes like the ''meet-cute'' are so tired that you can't just spoof them -- you have to spoof the spoofs, which this winking David Wain-Michael Showalter parody mostly succeeds at doing. Go to Full Review

The film is packed with smart humor, joke complexity, clever approaches, and an elaborate sense of story-building and delivery that most parodies lack. Go to Full Review

The jokes can be specific to a hermetic extreme: I don’t think the gag cutting from an exterior shot of the Strand bookstore to an interior that’s a smaller, different establishment might travel outside NYC, but it’s still a great niche joke... Go to Full Review

James E Sep 9 This is a very strange film. It acts like a parody of the rom com genre, but it follows through all of the tropes without always following through on the joke, making it feel a bit confused. Many of the jokes try to mimic the botched subtlety of British humor, but the American style of humor this film follows does not compliment the British style of comedy, making this a fun, but not too memorable film. See more Ami S Aug 11 I get it’s a farce on romantic comedies, but it just was not very funny. I really wanted to like it because the romantic comedy tropes definitely are ridiculous and need a good bashing but I just couldn’t get myself to laugh at most of it. They did the thing SNL is known for…going too long with a joke that’s just that funny to begin with. You know, that beating a dead horse until you just need to look away and eventually just turn it off. It’s sad when the farce is not getting as many laughs as the romantic comedies they’re making fun of. I’d much prefer to watch When Harry Met Sally which actually was genuinely hilarious and didn’t treat you like an idiot See more Jul 25 Great movie- great cast. Ok, basically the movie goofs on tropes of rom-com's and 'feel good' movies, to a pretty entertaining effect. I liked it quite a lot. I also understand why this is one of the few movies the critic's would get- but the audience, not as much. An easy keeper for your collection. Paul Rudd is so underutilized as an actor- give this man more work please. See more zz @CheeseBurger Jul 22 Amazing cast amazing comedy just the ending wasn’t the best See more Alyxia E Jun 7 Crazy hilarious, so much ridiculousness, and so many talented people I love make appearances. Best fight scene in any movie, ever, by FAR. LOL And lots of subtle details like the pahking accompany the over the top relentlessly funny in your face stuff. I LOVE this so much. See more Spyral S Jun 3 A very likeable cast and some very funny moments but far too gratuitously vulgar, as if written by teenaged boys. It spoofs a bounty of romantic movies and one not-so-romantic movie (Get Out,) to so-so effect. Still, there are worse ways to waste your time. See more Read all reviews
