Eddie Barnes (Eddie Albert) loves Mary Matthews (Joan Leslie), whose father, Charles (Vaughan Glaser), is in direct business competition with Eddie's father, Rodney (Alan Hale). Anxious to set forth on their own path, the young couple elope while Eddie makes a deal with a shady businessman (Hobart Cavanaugh) to buy a decrepit factory and start his own business. When it looks like Eddie can't fulfill the peculiar terms of the deal, mobster Chick Collins (Anthony Quinn) gets involved.
