Dave S Life is simple, until it's not. In Things to Come, Nathalie (Isabelle Hubert) is a philosophy teacher, a middle-aged mother of two in a sound marriage, who has a firm grasp on all that life has to offer. When her aging mother dies and her husband leaves her for another woman, she is forced to redefine her life in the face of absolute freedom. Beautifully shot and featuring another great performance from Hubert, Things to Come is a tender and moving slice-of-life film that will force audiences to consider the fragility of their own circumstances. In a cinematic era of prequels, sequels and reboots, Things to Come proves to be a touching, intelligent and, ultimately, inspirational change of pace. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Audience Member The greatest 01 hour: and 41 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member European indie with solid casting and some highbrow elements is mostly bogged down by it's uninteresting aspects e.g. romantic cliches. Still the casting is solid and performances from the main players are quite good. Just. 😐 👍🏼👎🏼 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A very French movie that contrasts people's philosophical beliefs against their everyday actions. Adam Nayman Cinema Scope As Denis Lenoir's camera recedes into a carefully bisected domestic composition, the boundaries between the past, the present, and the future shimmer and blur together in a way that suggests that nothing ever really slows down. Sep 28, 2017 Full Review David Stratton The Australian During the course of the film, Nathalie undergoes a series of crises and finds herself increasingly alone and alienated. Yet Hansen-Young, who is very good at this sort of thing, is no pessimist, and she concludes her film on a nod to "l'avenir." Rated: 4/5 Apr 28, 2017 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald It sounds like slight stuff but Hansen-Love is an expert in the observational -- the habits and customs that make up a life and the sense of dislocation that results when they're no longer possible. Rated: 4/5 Apr 26, 2017 Full Review Farah Cheded A Good Movie To Watch This is a movie about our surprising ability to deal with disaster — the instincts that emerge when we least expect them to [...] Hansen-Løve’s gentle, intelligent filmmaking puts people at its center as it explores human resilience. Sep 29, 2023 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine Mia Hansen-Løve’s Things to Come represents a major return to the form of her terrific first two films. Jan 17, 2023 Full Review Diego Lerer Otroscines.com A story about the flow of life, the passage of time, generational conflict, and the moment in which middle age isn't suddenly as far as it seemed.
