An emotionally wrenching, not to mention terrifying, film about the perils of being a teenager.

Amy Taubin Film Comment Magazine The script is as overexcited as the girls themselves, and its affirmative ending is unearned. Apr 10, 2018 Full Review Neil Norman London Evening Standard It is here that the performances pay emotional dividends. The sight of Hunter kissing her daughter's self-inflicted scars as if trying to kiss away the psychological pain that raised them will haunt me for some time. Jan 11, 2018 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media Explicit peer pressure story for older teens. Rated: 4/5 Dec 29, 2010 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) The film remains a searing time capsule of a place, and a timeless elegy for that messy period in girls’ lives that we’re all lucky if we make it out in one piece. Feb 13, 2024 Full Review Tom Meek Cambridge Day Given the room for platitude and cliche, the film's wholly genuine, gritty and from the heart. Rated: 3.5/4 Oct 3, 2020 Full Review Kaleem Aftab The List Thirteen tries too hard to shock... but it is nonetheless a sensational look at the flip side of the American dream. Yash B "Thirteen" is an uncomfortable watch, but it is an honest movie that forces the viewer to face some harsh realities. This is a really well-made film that does a lot with strong performances and minimal settings. I found myself engaged with the story and even when the characters behaved in a frustrating manner, I felt it was intentional and it didn't make the difficult moments any easier to watch. Overall, this is a coming-of-age movie that takes a darker and more serious approach to the topic and it certainly leaves an impact, even if it is not a movie designed for entertainment. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Matt C Could’ve been a very powerful film but has several major shortcomings that rob it of emotional heft. The pacing is frenetic, particularly in the first, and we spend too much time seeing what the main character is doing and far too little time feeling what’s she’s feeling. The camera work and cinematography is highly distracting. From the handheld camera feel to the abrupt changes in colour palette, I spent too much time focused on that rather than connecting with the characters. There is some good acting, particularly from Holly Hunter, but again the script and pacing never allowed enough space for me to feel what the characters were going through emotionally. The best scene in the movie was one where the main character is alone in a bathroom looking at herself in the mirror. The film would’ve benefited from slowing down and focusing on more of these quiet, still moments of substance. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/28/25 Full Review Audience Member the two main actors did a phenomenal job and the writer and main character did a amazing job with everything especially with the coloring of the film. This is a great movie make you look back on my own life and experiences that have happened similar. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/25 Full Review Lexi S LOVE THIS MOVIE great plot, amazing actresses beautiful sets, perfect storyline, deep meaning, relatable. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/25 Full Review Ember B To be honest, i don't know because i like or don't like same time. this movie kinda sad. it make me cry when i see the ending. it very hurts to see teenagers do drugs, sneaking out, treat parents different, and self-harm. Which one they not be themselves. they learn from other teenagers and bad inflection and ruined their own teenagers and very traumatized. Learn about what real and fake friend is. I will say mixed emotion this movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review Read all reviews
