Tim Grierson Screen International When Thirteen Lives directs its energies toward illustrating the impossibility of the divers’ mission, the film is solidly compelling. Marc M I thought this was well done in every way. A very gripping film. It really gave me a new appreciation for the effort that went into trying to save these boys. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/02/22 Full Review Hart A Exciting start to finish. like true stories and this one was done excellent much in part to the great directing by Ron Howard. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/31/22 Full Review Michael Excellent film, providing depth to a real story with star studded performance! Another great work by director Ron Howard. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/31/22 Full Review Jay W More than almost any other movie in recent history, this movie gave me an optimistic view of the power of a community. I would have to go back to "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946) or "The Blob" (1958) to get another movie that competes with its ability to demonstrate the power of a group of people coming together for a common goal. Everybody does their part and it is a real heartwarming true story of so many people giving up their time and resources to help out. Ron Howard has been a mixed bag director. For an example, he directed "The Grinch" in 2000 but then totally redeemed himself directing "a Beautiful Mind" in 2001. Gladly we are getting Ron Howard's directing at its finest in this tense story. With a movie so focused on cave diving, it would be difficult to film the action scenes with much clarity. But Howard does a great job showing the audience where everyone is, where they have to go, and exactly how hard it is to accomplish the goal. There is a sense of claustrophobia in the cave sequences, but I am never visually confused about what is happening. The main negative that holds this back would be the characters. Don't misunderstand, I think that all the actors involved in this are absolutely bringing their A-Game to the roles. There are just so many characters involved and so many sub plots that some of them get mixed up in the shuffle. The movie does an excellent job with tension. The movie communicates what needs to be done and exactly how many different ways the project could fail. And the movie plays the suspense for each one of the ways in a very clever way. A 2-hour 27 minute movie and the entire last hour I was at the edge of my seat. It was like a really good heist movie, but instead of stealing money, they're saving lives. A lot of people came together to help these kids out and pull off a miracle. A lot of people came together to make this movie, and they pulled off a very good film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Ralph R Thirteen Lives is a deeply moving film that highlights the incredible true story of the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in Thailand. Directed by Ron Howard, the movie focuses on the global effort and teamwork that led to the miraculous rescue of a young soccer team and their coach. The performances by Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, and Joel Edgerton are excellent, portraying the bravery and skill of the divers who risked everything to save the boys. The film is technically outstanding, with gripping underwater scenes and a realistic portrayal of the challenging conditions faced by the rescuers. Howard’s direction keeps the focus on the human element, showing the immense sacrifices and collaboration that made the rescue possible. However, I couldn’t help but feel like something was missing. The movie spends so much time on the rescuers’ perspective that it doesn’t dive deeply into the emotional experiences of the boys and their coach. This lack of focus on their side of the story left me feeling that a key part of the event’s impact was underexplored. Despite this, Thirteen Lives is still a powerful film that captures the resilience and determination of everyone involved in the rescue. It’s a testament to what humanity can achieve when people come together in the face of impossible odds. While it might not fully explore every emotional angle, it’s a well-made and inspiring story that’s worth watching.
