      Three Men and a Baby

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Like the French farce it's based on, Three Men and a Baby is too self-satisfied with scatalogical humor to qualify as a bundle of joy, but the role of makeshift daddy brings out the best in Tom Selleck.

Jack t When I agree to do comedy films, Three Men and a Baby is one of the films I were looking the least forward to reviewing. OK not THE least well we'll get to that one later. OK guys, I know my mum liked it and says it's a good film, but for me, I was crying my tears just looking at the baby. Ya know why? Because I love baby's, they're so cute. But it has some funny scenes in it. That's right, it stars Tom Selleck, that crazy Steve Guttenberg and last but not least Ted Danson. What else can I say, I like it. I just hope I don't cry all the way through the film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/29/23 Full Review Chris G Even 30 years removed from its release, the contrast of bachelorhood and quickfire parenting is funny to see when displayed between the three well matched leads....even when it briefly shifts into a crime hijinks film in the middle? The 80s were wild. Tom's stache was perfect, 5 stars. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/25/23 Full Review joel h I didn't really think about it back in the day, but Three Men and a Baby is an odd movie. Where else would you find a lighthearted comedy for the whole family that also features heroin dealers and attempted murder? No, this film isn't as funny as I remembered it being, but it's still an uplifting and enjoyable story with an extremely adorable baby. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member No sir, I didn't like it. I wanted to but I wasn't rolling on the floor laughing as much as I hoped. I mean, the actors do a good job, some of the jokes and comedic timing stick the landing and things do get pretty wholesome when the 3 men warm up to the baby but overall, it just felt like a glorified sitcom with its leads not having any good chemistry, some cringey '80s sexism and a heroin subplot that feels unnecessary. I know there are people who like this movie but 3 Men and a Baby just wasn't very funny. Maybe the original French version was better but Hollywood's take didn't even work on its own terms in my eyes. How did this become the highest-grossing film of 1987 again? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member actually quite a dark film. not dark as is in self-righteous goth by real life dark. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member A Touchstone release about three bachelor's (Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, and Ted Danson) who live in a New York City penthouse who are left with a baby. This Leonard Nimoy directed film was the highest grossing film of 1987. The three leads have a certain charisma to them and this drives the whole movie. I didn't find much of the movie laugh out loud funny. Margaret Colin, who plays Tom Selleck's character's girlfriend, did have a few lines I laughed at. This is a cute movie and I understand why it spawned a few sequels. I'd recommend at least one viewing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Johanna Steinmetz Chicago Tribune The film works well despite its predictability, perhaps because of it. We can sit back and enjoy all the timeworn, sexist antics of three seasoned comic actors fumbling with formula and diapers, and a script that keeps its laughs on the dry side. Rated: 3/4 Apr 20, 2022 Full Review Hal Boedeker Miami Herald Something got lost in the translation. In French, the story was charming. In English, it’s cutesy-poo. The movie makes this point: Babies are wonderful and they change your life. But didn’t you know that? Rated: 2/5 Apr 20, 2022 Full Review Jeff Strickler Minneapolis Star Tribune The charm, allure and hard work of the cast more than compensates for the structural gaps. Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg (and twins Lisa and Michelle Blair, who take turns playing the baby) interact exquisitely. Rated: 8/10 Apr 20, 2022 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) A certified blockbuster. [Full review in Spanish] Jul 5, 2022 Full Review Mary Beth Crain L.A. Weekly While it lacks the sinister mindlessness of the Three Stooges' variation on the same theme, the film tends to work, thanks to the strong teamwork, competently jazzy direction by Leonard Nimoy, and a real cutie pie of a baby girl. Apr 20, 2022 Full Review Bruce Bailey Montreal Gazette The French got away with the obvious plotting because they knew at what point to leave a joke alone. Unfortunately, the Americans push everything too far -- and all they get for their pains is a very expensive sitcom. Rated: 1.5/4 Apr 20, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
