Matt M @Onryo 1d Tiger Claws II is exactly the kind of 90s martial arts movie people don’t make anymore. It’s gritty, over the top, and packed with solid old school fight choreography that still holds up for fans of vintage martial arts cinema. The movie fully embraces that direct to video action style from the era, and that’s a big part of its charm. Screenwriter and director Stephen Maunder deserves credit for understanding exactly what this movie needed to be. The pacing moves quickly, the tone stays fun, and the film leans into the campy energy that made many martial arts movies from the 90s memorable. Jalal Merhi may not be the strongest dramatic actor, but the movie still works because it focuses on entertainment, action, and personality rather than trying to be something it’s not. Tiger Claws II is not trying to be prestige cinema. It’s trying to be a fun late night martial arts movie, and in that respect, it succeeds.
