Critics Consensus

A clever and stylish riff on the body horror that is puberty, Tiger Stripes is an exuberant allegory for personal agency as well as an impressive debut for writer-director Amanda Nell Eu.

Monica Castillo RogerEbert.com Amanda Nell Eu’s feature debut is a lively coming-of-age story that mixes the mundane and the supernatural with ease. Rated: 3/4 Jun 14, 2024 Full Review Alissa Wilkinson New York Times Eu smartly weaves that universality together with local myths and legends, and the result is a little eerie and unsettling, a film about dark things we’re afraid to speak about. Jun 14, 2024 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) The message is not always clear, but it’s an entertaining ride. Rated: 3/5 May 20, 2024 Full Review Kyle Logan ScreenAnarchy Tiger Stripes may not have a very original premise, but it delivers a beautiful and incisive story of the monstrous feminine that can stand alongside the great films that came before, and deserves to be just as celebrated. Mar 14, 2025 Full Review Sharai Bohannon Dread Central ‘Tiger Stripes’ is the kind of film many of us would have loved to have as we were hitting puberty...It effectively captures the horrors of puberty alongside the awkward and uncomfortable moments that still haunt most of us. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 26, 2025 Full Review Carla Monfort Espinof Tiger Stripes is one of the best coming-of-age films released in 2024, and it is refreshing how it uses fantasy to address concerns about transitioning into adolescence. B P A Charming Piece of Period Body Horror. ‘Tiger Stripes’ is the kind of film many of us would have loved to have as we were hitting puberty. The film is like a warm hug for those who figured it all out under different chaotic circumstances. It effectively captures the horrors of puberty alongside the awkward and uncomfortable moments that still haunt most of us. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/25 Full Review Audience Member The story itself is very confusing,I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone🙅🏼‍♀️ Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/04/24 Full Review Hugo S Rural Malaysia. Zaffan is a rebellious 12yo girl who has just reached puberty. She starts experiencing hideous mutations in her body, gradually transforming into a fierce animal. Rejected by other girls in school, the girl often manifests violent outbursts that seem to have a contagious effect on the other pupils. The transition to womanhood has a dramatic impact in the main character. "Tiger Stripes" unleashes the monster that is often perceived in a female body going through the process of growing up. A decent body horror movie with a visceral perspective on coming-of-age storytelling. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/28/24 Full Review bobby d Started out so beautifully and would have loved for the story to continue exploring attitudes and emotions, rather than becoming a total supernatural allegory devoid of human motivations.
