For new audiences Wish You Were Here is competent but not exceptional. For the fans it is something that feels genuinely unique, and tantalisingly leaves itself open for future visits to Shibamata.

So many things to like about this film. First, the restoration work done on the archival footage is exceptional. Second, for those of us longtime fans of the Tora-San series, it's a joy to be back in that world. And the updated world of Mitsuo and Izumi is touching and heartfelt. I thoroughly enjoyed what director Yamada Yoji has accomplished here. He has given us fans a great gift.
