Marking writer-director John Maclean's welcome return to the Western genre, Tornado's melange of tones doesn't always cohere but is unique enough to be worth giving a whirl.

Leaf Arbuthnot New Statesman The film looks and sounds like a better film than it is... Moments of beauty aren’t enough to make a film worth seeing, and there is something lacking here. Characters speak ponderously and act incomprehensibly. Jun 18, 2025 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) The scenario has solid potential as a plunge into Treasure of the Sierra Madre-style paranoia. The way it’s executed here, though, plants an awful lot of stumbling blocks. Rated: 2/5 Jun 17, 2025 Full Review Barry Levitt Empire Magazine Tornado’s occasional pacing issues are propelled by Jed Kurzel’s ferocious score, Robbie Ryan’s haunting cinematography, and standout performances from Kōki and Tim Roth. Rated: 3/5 Jun 17, 2025 Full Review Tom Cassidy Common Sense Media Unfortunately, Tornado is a joyless drama due to flat, serious, and lifeless performances. Jun 27, 2025 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix It’s ironic that this tedious action film is titled Tornado because the story and hollow characters are as inert as stale air. Set in the rural British Isles in 1790, it's a disjointed series of scenes about a 16-year-old girl being hunted by a gang. Jun 24, 2025 Full Review Carmen Paddock The Skinny With arrestingly austere cinematography by Robbie Ryan and strong performances across the cast, Tornado brings out the wildest, most lawless side of samurai stories, which Tornado and her father, Fujin (Takehiro Hira), perform as travelling puppeteers. Max T Cool, slow-burn revenge project I have seen this year! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/06/25 Full Review movies_with_Peter on IG Couldn’t decide if it was a family film. Kids film. Cowboy film. Or samurai film. All n all, a fine college movie final quality film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/05/25 Full Review ALVIN H A good mishmash’s of Old Western/ Samurai movie. Not enough character building and the only redeeming aspect of the movie is the third act of the movie Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/05/25 Full Review Mr. Hollywood The movie is straight to the point with some decent kills. But with that it doesnt do much else. Story is simple and cinematography looks decent but you could tell the budget wasnt that big. Worth a watch Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/05/25 Full Review Kelvin G It was fine. The lead actress handled the role well and Tim Roth was a good villain but the story was pretty weak. The other characters felt like fodder for the plot to move forward rather actual characters. The run time was nice and tight. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/05/25 Full Review Jeff Beautifully shot period piece set in 1790 Scotland this is a slow drawn out revenge with minimal satisfaction.
