11/30/2014 It is not a war movie: it is a movie about the war, told as only Ermanno Olmi can tell. There are some gun shot (2, if one wants to count them), and many cannon bombs: but they are needed for the story. It is one night on the front, during a cold mountain winter of World War I. There is very little action, everything happens in a very small area, there is no heroic picturing of war, only the tragedy of it is portrayed. And these men, telling almost without words the horror of the war. An immense pity for them is shown by Olmi. Actually, they do not speak very much, and soldiers speak each one in his own dialect - there are subtitles in the Italian version of the movie. The landscapes are beautiful, by the way, the music minimal, but everything in the right place ... A perfect movie. Nothing to change. One of the best movie I have seen in years. The emotional deliverance was impressive: not a whisper could be heard during the 80 minutes of the movie. And, in the end, I have seen more than one handkerchief ... mine included ...
