Alec B The accepted take on this is that the first half is delightful while the second half disappoints, which yeah it is supposed to be disappointing because there were no good choices for the characters. I really don't know what ending people wanted instead. Jackson and Segal are just fantastic, being really funny while selling the tragedy of the ending. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review georgan g In fairness, romantic comedy is NOT my favorite genre...for the same reason this isn't a great flick. No logic. No character development. Just goofy with a meaningless ending. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The only false move Glenda Jackson makes is having to act a crying scene while watching "Brief Encounter." Otherwise, her surprise Oscar win is justified, though shocking, having bested heavy dramatic Oscar-nominated performances for 1973. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review steve d Everything about it is really unlikable. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A touch of boredom. A shallow and slow-witted movie about 2 callous seemingly ppl. They have an affair without a second thought as to who they are hurting and also with seemingly little love connection. All either of the 2 main characters care about is themselves, not their children, pets, friends, each other or their spouses. The humor was also bad, as was the music. It's very dated from the 70s. The whole thing seemed silly and stupid, like it was trying to reach for something deep n failed miserably with this corny rendition. I've seen good movies about affairs, this was not one of them. Penelope Gilliatt New Yorker Apart from a touch of nitwittery, it is often spry. Mar 4, 2024 Full Review Joy Gould Boyum Wall Street Journal While it’s a bit too predictable, a bit too obvious in its sentiments to pull on the heartstrings of us all, most of the time it does manage to be funny enough to take in almost anyone. Aug 10, 2022 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times A Touch of Class is a sharp-edged, often very funny dissection of a love affair between two possibly incompatible people. But then it gets serious with itself and ends on a note that doesn't satisfy us. Rated: 3/4 Oct 23, 2004 Full Review Dick Lochte Los Angeles Free Press It's the most relentlessly new-fashioned old-fashioned movie in town. Dec 31, 2019 Full Review Christopher Hudson The Spectator [Glenda Jackson] is a rivetingly good actress, able to turn the shallowly-defined character of Melvin Frank's screenplay into a woman of some depth and complexity. Sep 27, 2015 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com One of the few comedies to be Oscar-nominated in the 1970s, this British film about adulterous affair benefits from the strong chemistry between George Segal and Glenda Jackson, who won a second Best Actress for her part.
