Obsessed with finding a girlfriend, Gregory often has elaborate fantasies where he imagines himself as a successful ladies' man. While Gregory passes the time with his slick, trouble-seeking friend, June (Donald Adeosun Faison), he can't seem to escape his rut until he meets the pretty and brainy Cinny (Maia Campbell). What to Know

Critics Consensus

Trippin' struggles to balance its raunchy teen comedy elements against an unfortunate tendency toward preachy moralizing.

Nathan Rabin AV Club Intermittently funny and good-natured, Trippin' won't disappoint its target audience. Jul 28, 2014 Full Review Robert Dominguez New York Daily News A disjointed, lowbrow comedy about a teen coping with his uncertain future through daydreams. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 28, 2014 Full Review Rod Dreher New York Post An after-school special posing as Booty Call, stumbling badly over its clunky message-movie scripting. Jul 28, 2014 Full Review Todd Anthony South Florida Sun-Sentinel The messages, in other words, are mixed -- which makes them pretty much consistent with the perspective of a hormone-driven 17-year-old boy. Viewed in that context, Trippin' doesn't fall quite so far. Jul 28, 2014 Full Review Maitland McDonagh TV Guide Swirl together a pious message movie, a silly high-school yuck-fest and a raunchy, booty-shaking comedy, and this picture is the infelicitous result. Rated: 2/4 Jul 28, 2014 Full Review Dayana Stetco Metro Times (Detroit, MI) As the credits roll into oblivion, James Thurber's ghost puts out his cigarette. There's another movie he could've written! Da' Author T This movie is 4sho a classic, for the people who love a good AA comedy. This movie is the one, it never gets old. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/08/24 Full Review Audience Member Remember little Kenny from Cosby Show? (And between Bill and Raven Symoné, Kenny might be the only untainted memory left from that series.) Several years later, actor Deion Richmond was all grown up and looking to make a splash as the lead in a vaguely adult coming-of-age comedy. Objectively, Trippin' is terrible, but it's also a cult classic that shoulda been, as a likeable Richmond riffs his way through one horndog/would-be hero daydream sequence after another as a way of putting off the looming reality of college. Bouyed by the ageless Donald Faison, Trippin' has one foot in Kid 'N Play-style '90s farce and the other one firmly forward into a Smiley Face, stream-of-consciousness stoner paean Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member A dumb but funny urban teen flick.
