Critics Consensus

Trollhunter is a mockumentary with an appropriate level of creeping dread, but one that also benefits from generous helpings of dry wit.

Jason Bailey DVDTalk.com Rated: 4/5 Apr 6, 2012 Full Review Michael Wilmington Chicago Reader The film is shot with handheld cameras in the standard mockumentary style, but the content is often hilarious, especially when the trolls show up. Dec 13, 2011 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) vredal's movie has wittier ideas up its sleeve than the average "mock-doc" shocker, a genre it transcends through sheer originality. Rated: 4/5 Sep 9, 2011 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Øvredal’s frame, for the most part, resists typical “found footage” unintelligibility and captures some truly arresting scenery from the director’s homeland, all with some minor commentary about preserving our natural wildlife treasures. Rated: 3/4 Jun 7, 2023 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy One of the better entries in the “found footage” series of faux documentaries. Rated: 3/4 Feb 15, 2023 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts I know that people are against found footage films but this one, just you can't fault it really, I mean other than having trolls which is kind of silly... It did everything right. Rated: 8/10 Jun 2, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Maciej P It's unwatchable, it's so bad I decided to leave a comment. There's literally nothing good in this movie except for the setting. The plot is ridiculous, CGI is like in the 90s. On top of all of that it's in norwegian, so you either accept no lip sync or choose subtitles and listen to gibberish. Don't make the mistake I did and just skip it Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/25 Full Review Greg D Great found footage movie, with surprisingly good effects. Rewatched in 2025, and it holds up quite well. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Jack S This movie is amazing 100% would recommend to anyone does a great job at looking real and engaging with the story Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Aidan B Some solid work and great lore make up for a lackluster story and disappointing result. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/22/24 Full Review B P Great troll mythology film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/12/24 Full Review Georgan G This movie is worthy of a cult, it's that much fun. Between the acting & special effects, there is no time to get bored. Best of all, there are several species of trolls! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews
