Critics Consensus

Tusk is pleasantly ridiculous and charmingly self-deprecating, but that isn't enough to compensate for its thin, overstretched story.

Jason Bailey Flavorwire 'Tusk' opens with the sound of two men laughing at their own jokes, so I guess a doff of the cap is due to the filmmaker for encapsulating his movie so efficiently, right from the jump. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Eric Kohn indieWire Justin Long and Johnny Depp join the "Clerks" director for a weird, unpredictable movie that still feels like only Smith could have made it. Rated: B+ Oct 28, 2015 Full Review Evan Williams The Australian Parts of it are funny, parts are suspenseful and parts of it - to put it mildly - are hideously awful. Horrible may be a better word than horrific. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 16, 2014 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast Kevin Smith's second foray into genre territory is a mostly successful tonal mishmash with some of the most grotesque imagery to come out of the 2010s. Rated: 4/5 Feb 23, 2023 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast Aside from Johnny Depp's inscrutable "French Canada" accent, Kevin Smith's second horror film is bizarre, unsettling and frequently very funny. Rated: 4/5 Feb 17, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The material never quite commits itself tonally. Some scenes feel like a grotesque chiller, others play like your usual Smith-brand comedy. When Smith tries to combine these two tones, the unbalanced result is more awkward than enjoyable. Aron J Surprisingly funny and definitely terrible Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Thomas G Powerful movie that moved me in ways not seen since The Human Centipede… Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/09/24 Full Review Ryan F Film was very disturbing but it was an enjoyable watch i still see that walrus in my sleep Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/24 Full Review Caroline P One of the worst movie I’ve ever seen. How American see Canadian is a shame. The jokes are poor and easy. The story is boring and the characters are just bad caricatures. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/16/24 Full Review Beefy P I have created a Rotten Tomatoes account purely to defend this movie. The ratings are absolutely criminal. This is a fine example of comedy and horror in the same film, the juxtaposition making it all the more jarring. Genuinely disturbing and hilarious. If you don’t like it, I get it. But this should have been received much better, hence the rating to help even it out. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Catherine B Very weird like movie so disturbing how friends can leave their Friend in a zoo at the final incomprehensible Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Read all reviews
