      Critics Consensus

The real Twist in this lunkheaded Dickens update is the involvement of Michael Caine, who hopefully got another terrific house out of it.

George H Absolutely abysmal! I watched this expecting it a good subversion of Oliver Twist only to get a boring movie with boring choreography and terrible acting. Even from Michael Caine who tried and failed at doing a Russian accent. If there was a 0 star rating I would give to this movie it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Bad plot bad acting.. what a shame Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Remarkably silly, Oliver Twist + parkour. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Different take on the Dickens classic which is an easy watch, but I much preferred the book to the film. Was nice to see some big names in there, however it felt they may have been used as a distraction to poorer acting skills of lesser known names. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/21 Full Review Audience Member Twist lives up to its title as a modern-day retelling of Oliver Twist, with Michael Caine as Issac "Fagin" Solomon, Rafferty Law as Twist, Lena Headey as Sikes, Rita Ora as Dodge, Noel Clarke as Brownlow, Jason Maza as Bedwin (Clarke and Maza co-produced the film), Franz Drameh as Batesey, Sophie Simnett as Nancy "Red" Leigh, David Walliams as Dr. Crispin Losberne, Dominic Di Tommaso as Tom Chitling and Leigh Francis as Warden Bumble. The world of Twist is less about pickpockets and more about the world of art theft, parkour and graffiti, so it's definitely a much more modern update, right? This was directed by Martin Owen, who also made L.A. Slasher, Let's Be Evil and Killers Anonymous. It has the feel of Kingsmen or Now You See Me and if you liked those movies, you'll like this. If you're a stickler for the classics, you surely will not. Raff Law is, of course, the son of Jude Law and this is a nice way to introduce him to audiences. And it's filled with needle drop songs you obviously know, so there's that was well. It was a pleasant enough way to spend an afternoon, to be fair. Guy Lodge Variety It has no fresh angle on the material at all - merely a heist-by-numbers subplot straight out Guy Ritchie's drafts bin, welded to Dickens' coming-of-age narrative with all the poetry of a press release for a brand collaboration. Jul 29, 2021 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian I think this is a movie targeted at 20-somethings. It's modern, light and a bit of fun. Rated: 2.5/5 Apr 23, 2021 Full Review Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) This is a totally ridiculous movie. No one appears to be in on the joke, though Caine's unswerving professional code guarantees he wouldn't let on if he were: that takes a degree of commitment, if not precisely effort. Rated: 1.5/5 Apr 22, 2021 Full Review Roger Moore Movie Nation Call it a “bad movie” that plays, because that’s all this shoots for. Rated: 2/4 Jul 30, 2022 Full Review Victoria Luxford City AM The dialogue is laboured, and the direction is as subtle as a double-decker bus. Rated: 1/5 Mar 1, 2022 Full Review Leo Brady AMovieGuy.com When it comes to doing Charles Dickens novels, it seems like a flashy and cool thing to revive his work with the times, but it ultimately ends up pointless.
