Inspector Ciccio Ingravallo (Pietro Germi) is assigned to investigate a robbery, but soon circumstances lead to a much bigger case. The lovely Liliana Banducci (Eleonora Rossi Drago), who lives near the scene of the crime, turns up dead, leading Ingravallo to question her husband, Remo (Claudio Gora), and their servant, Assuntina (Claudia Cardinale), among others. The astute Italian inspector must discover both the motive behind the killing and the culprit.
