Critics Consensus

With a weaker ending, Unbreakable is not as a good as The Sixth Sense. However, it is a quietly suspenseful film that intrigues and engages, taking the audience through unpredictable twists and turns along the way.

Matthew Rozsa Salon.com "Unbreakable" is likely to stand the test of time as long as stories about superheroes - or heroes in general - are still sought by scared, suffering human beings. Mate P ***SPOILERS*** Unbreakable is just so far from what I expected. The plot is intriguing, but it ultimately works because the amazing twist, that I would never have expected in a thousand years and it also makes sense. The characters are well-written with great drama and motivations. There is some ridiculousness to it with the scene where the kid tries to shoot his father, but I can forgive them for this scene. The direction is great with a clear tone and amazing cinematography. There are some awesome angles and amazing long takes. The cast is great where even the child actor is recognizable. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson gave terrific performances. Unbreakable is not just a very good film, but also a great surprise. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/09/25 Full Review BRizz 2 Unbreakable, starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, completely caught me off guard—in the best way. I went into it with low expectations, and I walked out thoroughly impressed. This film isn’t just a superhero story; it’s a slow-burn psychological thriller that builds an immersive, grounded world that pulls you in and refuses to let go. The action isn’t over-the-top but when it hits, it hits. It’s handled in such a raw and realistic way that it adds to the film’s intensity rather than overshadowing the story. The screenplay is smart and patient, allowing the narrative to develop organically. While not flawless, the direction by M. Night Shyamalan is unexpectedly gripping. I’m not usually a big fan of his work, but here, he nails it. What truly elevates this film is the uncanny chemistry between Willis and Jackson. These two legendary actors complement each other so well that every scene they share feels magnetic. Jackson’s portrayal of Elijah Price is haunting and layered, while Willis brings a quiet, reluctant heroism to David Dunn that’s incredibly compelling. If I had to nitpick, I’d say some of the secondary characters could’ve used more development, but it doesn’t take away from the film’s impact. The cinematography is atmospheric and moody, and it serves the story perfectly. 🎬 Overall, Unbreakable is a bold, underrated entry in the superhero genre—deep, dark, and dramatically rich. If you’ve never seen it, it’s time to fix that. Highly recommended. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/09/25 Full Review Cristian M Pretty boring. It has a great potential but just didn’t really get me hooked Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/01/25 Full Review Tyler G A dark, brooding, deliberate film that moves at a glacially slow pace, which is the perfect vehicle for Bruce Willis. The scenes and editing is sparse, but it all works. It is imperfect, but I like it a lot. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/17/25 Full Review Audience Member It was a nice one time watch Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review Tony B A film that stands up well to repeat viewings. It's well-acted and well-directed. I wonder how Samuel L. Jackson's character affords his medical bills, though. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/04/25 Full Review Read all reviews
