      Critics Consensus

A well-directed action thriller that makes the most of its confined setting, Under Siege marks a high point for early '90s action -- and its star's spotty filmography.

Howard H Good story, characters and a very, very sexy coactor that will give teenage boys wet dreams forever. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review sean G Great movie full of action from the start , good story , keep me watching . Good movie for its time . 10/10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review Sebastian B On the whole a terrible film. Premise was not convincing at all and was just a carbon copy of die hard. Plenty of gratuitous violence and general lack of suspense. Characters received very little development. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/03/24 Full Review Blu B A solid 90's Action Flick & Seagal's Finest Hour. The first 20 minutes is a bit cheesy and over the top but once the ship take over happens it takes a solid jump up and never lets up. The shootouts and practical effects are all really well done and esaily the highlight. The ship setting is memorable and does a good job holding tension and it doesn't get too complicated ever to follow. It's basically Die Hard on a ship and that's a good thing. The acting isn't bad but defintely the weakest part while everything else is solid. Seagal has more life here than any other peformance but it's still a 2 steps below Keanu Reeves. Tommy Lee Jones is the best thing in a hammed up over the top performance that is really good and makes for a great ensemble villian cast. Everyone else is just kind of forgettable. None of the characters have much depth to them at all. Also, not sure why Jones doesn't just shoot Seagal after knowing how dangerous he is and encountering him before also. It also does start to run out of steam a bit in the final 10-15 minutes but it ends well. The knife fight is a bit over the top but still. Anyone who is a fan of 90's action, any actors in this, the director, or Seagal especially will enjoy this. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/24 Full Review C.S.R What an all time absolute classic! If you've never seen this movie you won't be disappointed, is that good! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/07/24 Full Review Alain M rewatching this in 2023 makes you realise what bad of an actor Steven Seagal actually was. He couldn't carry an action movie, this movie is only there to boost his ego and his prowess with an martial arts that doesn't look anything nearly as spectacular as the one that JCVD shows of on screen, or Keanu Reeves for that matter (who is also uncomparable when it comes to acting) Steven might be full of himself, but this box-office (one of the few to his name) is mediocre at best Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Duane Byrge Hollywood Reporter Die Hard on a ship, this Steven Seagal starrer is a hard-charged, perfectly detonated actioner that should especially delight especially macho mainstreamers. Oct 25, 2019 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune The tension and humor level tail off a bit toward the conclusion, but Steven Seagal and Chicago director Andy Davis clearly declare themselves as top-flight talent. Rated: 3.5/4 Jul 10, 2017 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly Rated: B- Sep 7, 2011 Full Review John Ferguson Radio Times Seagal may lack natural charisma, but a flamboyant performance from Jones, plus some sterling work from fellow baddies Gary Busey and Colm Meaney, more than compensate for his deficiencies.
