Critics Consensus

Under the Silver Lake hits its stride slightly more often than it stumbles, but it's hard not to admire - or be drawn in by - writer-director David Robert Mitchell's ambition.

If a talented filmmaker opening the throttle of his imagination as wide as it can go appeals to you, you should give "Under the Silver Lake" a look. Go to Full Review

I'm prepared to give Mitchell the benefit of the doubt. His film looks great, and even though it lacks the discipline that might have made it a classic of its kind, it's well worth travelling down these mean cinematic streets. Go to Full Review

[Director David Robert] Mitchell has a gift for arresting and slightly discomfiting imagery, but he either can't, or won't, submit to the editing discipline that would give the film pace and drive. Go to Full Review

There’s a lot to unpack with Under the Silver Lake, and this is why I regard it as an interesting film despite its flaws. Given time, I believe this film could go on to be taken far more seriously... Go to Full Review

By the end of the film, I no longer cared about the conspiracy Sam is trying to uncover. That's a fatal flaw for any noir. Go to Full Review

Justin B Nov 27 A rare creature in a sea of monotony. Entertaining throughout if you prefer the unusual and unexpected. If you you need to know everything or you are out of tune with your imagination, probably not for you. See more baldylokz @Baldylokz Nov 25 I’m apparently not pretentious enough to appreciate this movie. It just wandered around and didn’t make any sense to me. I just finished it and have no idea what I just watched. Maybe if I was high on something I’d think it was brilliant? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I thought it was dumb and pointless. See more Dan D Nov 14 Though not perfect, this will be a Bonafide cult classic in a few years. I love this film. See more Steve B Oct 24 Ok, I just watched Under The Silver Lake. This may-be, THE most strange of movies Ive seen in at least a decade, but, its good 😅 So weird, but for anyone like me; I really enjoyed how it slithers through themes and whispers of goings on which we should all know, are most likely true. Easily the most original theme/script Ive had the pleasure to dive into in a looooong time. Lots of T&A in it, so be warned but I can't not recomend it 💯 Dont hope for an ending that makes you go... ohhhh i get it now 😅 maybe thats the point? Andrew Garfield was awesome at being the main character considering what goes on. His efforts work, and are able to somehow bring you on side with him to keep you engaged and caring what happens when it just gets stranger and stranger lol. Definitely worth a watch. It's clearly made for twenty-somethings, and if If this is what they consider entertainment, I fear for the future. This film is a poor imitation of the Coen brothers-----if they were 13 years old and had no brains. See more Vincent L Aug 27 Ce film divisé vraiment en 2 camps bien tranchés. En tant que français, j'ai adoré cette enquête romantique, étrange dans un LA qui donne envie d'y aller faire un tour.☺️ See more Read all reviews
