Although Kocur sticks the landing and doesn’t need to supply much context for the earliest moments of the family discovering what is going on back home, the uncertainty they feel threatens to become tedious. Go to Full Review

The film doesn't seek to move, but rather to expose the fragility of comfort when history erupts. In that sense, Under the Volcano examines the apathy in light of disaster, a territory where ethics merges with routine. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Just like Ruben Östlund’s films, Kocur’s drama is infused with a lull-before-the-storm feeling that pervades the interaction between the characters, both before and after the news of the military attack Go to Full Review

Kocur tends to devote too much time to the surly teen daughter immersed in her online world—I never quite warmed to her. But there is tremendous power in the tense scenes between dad and stepmom that made the film more than worthwhile. Go to Full Review

Andy H @andyhh Mar 17 A ukrainian family on vacation in the Canary Islands when the war breaks out. They can't get home, and must stay. You can easily figure what the story is next, and yes that is exactly what happens. They call their friends, who are scared, they watch news on the TV, they fight and argue, they cry. They hate seeing other people having vacation and good time. Well acted, with some social commentary where the teenage daughter befriends an african refugee, with the point they are also refugees, european refugees in europe. See more Kirsti P Mar 8 I saw this movie at TIFF and found it so very human. Nothing was glossy or smooth, the story was more than just what the family was dealing with, although that in itself was a lot. The relationships within the family, as well as their encounters in the local landscape, were all just so beautifully portrayed, and thus kudos go to the cinematography and the acting. Finding transcendence among tribulation is beauty. See more Bob C 12/13/2024 Lost opportunity to tell an important story but we'd need a) a plot and b) a script. Very disappointing. A final act with the family in Warsaw and dad heading to Kiev would have allowed the audience closure and brought the film's emotional arch to closure. The filmmaker treated their audience badly. See more David S @Kvetchy_Kvaddle 11/13/2024 Tedious and utterly devoid of insight. See more Read all reviews
