Virginia Graham The Spectator To the masculine digestion Jane Russell is a full meal in herself, but I fear that in Underwater! she will not provide the usual satisfying dish. Audience Member Slow, dull, visually uninteresting, and full of cardboard characters. Hardly a pulse to this deep sea treasure hunt from the onset. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/04/24 Full Review Audience Member Shipwrecks! Shark hunters! Swimsuits! Exclamation marks! All this, and not much more, filmed beautifully 'underwater!' Underwater! is a 50s B-movie that follows a treasure hunting expedition with pacing that is more akin to a relaxing fishing excursion than an aquatic tomb raider adventure. Tensions rise a little in the last half-hour or so, as a ticking clock in the form of a collapsing coral reef threatens the divers' efforts to retrieve a Madonna statue from a sunken galleon. After an hour of being conditioned to enjoy drawn-out sequences of bubbles floating past the camera from our protagonists' scuba tanks, this definitely felt like the height of excitement when it entered the narrative. Plus everybody looks great, whether they are underwater! or above it, so you have that going for you throughout the runtime. All up, this was actually kinda entertaining, and felt like a little Caribbean-flavoured vacation into the past. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Howard Hughes produced this John Sturges directed deep sea treasure hunting tale. It's not bad, but Jane Russell in various swim attire is the main reason to watch the film, which was enough for me. Jayne Mansfield isn't in the film, but gained Hollywood attention at the time when she was one of the bathing beauties at a press junket for the film and her bikini top "accidentally" fell off. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Fair aquatic adventure, but 'The Deep' did this type of treasure-hunting story much better 20 years later. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member technicolour+jane=va-va-voom! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Dull mediocrity with good underwater photography. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
