Deborah Ross The Spectator Unrelated observes the English upper-middle classes so astutely that, at times, it is almost painful to watch. Jan 29, 2018 Full Review Stephen Holden New York Times This is civilized human behavior captured with a clinical precision and accuracy. Jun 26, 2014 Full Review Chris Chang Film Comment Magazine Hogg works primarily with hypnotic, locked-down, wide-open compositions that seem, at times, to swallow up the people that inhabit them. Jun 17, 2013 Full Review Dave Giannini InSession Film Subtle filmmaking at its finest which demands your full attention and gives a reward. Feb 23, 2024 Full Review CJ Sheu Review Film Review It's an amazing film, let alone debut. May 26, 2021 Full Review Jason Best Movie Talk Hogg is brilliant at portraying the gamut of different shades of awkwardness and embarrassment: Anna's social and personal uneasiness is conveyed with squirm-inducing veracity. Naomi L One of the only films addressing that grey area between generations, the confusion of peri-menopause when you are childless, the general pathos of identifying with a younger group but being consigned to the older group without having transitioned to this through parenthood. Definitely high on FOMO. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Early Hogg and very impressive as a debut piece but more of a pointer for what's to come as she refines her style. Mum's best mate joins the adolescent family in a middle class wet dream Tuscan villa. Drinking, lithe forms, sun, landscapes all shape the non drama; sex almost happens. Like most of Hogg's work it's conscious of its privilege and lack of importance; that's why she works, we know everyone will go back to London, be rich and fine and turn the page - she never indulges the idea that there's there's really suffering with her gang. The whole premise is refreshed on Tresco for Archipelago, which I enjoyed more; but I suspect whichever you watch second will pale. Excellent though, all the same. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review tony h The non-ending is disappointing. Or perhaps it's an exhilirating new beginning after all, which would explain why it apparently were such a non-ending?! But it seemed to be going somewhere the whole time, and then, suddenly, it seemed to have gone nowhere at all. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review michael f Good, not great. Hogg gives a specific perspective and a movie that isn't beautiful by any means, but is definitely interesting. Hiddleston is smooth and Worth is fantastic in her slowness and softness. Hogg's feature is further than most. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A huge fan of Hoggs work and this is one of her earliest films. They are always the same slow deep brooding and well acted. Hiddleston is the star of this one. Its the story of a women who joins a family holiday and who harbours a secret. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member As if from nowhere, a first-time British film-maker has appeared with a tremendously accomplished, subtle and supremely confident feature, authorially distinctive and positively dripping with technique.
