Naruse's atypically swooping camera moves have a profound majesty, but his customary sense of stasis and observance is here as well via the film's languorous Noh sequences.

A sweet story of redemption, father/son reconciliation and forgiveness, and surprisingly free of propaganda and martial spirit given that it was made during wartime. I think this should be considered one of Naruse's better films.
