One of the franchise's stronger entries, V/H/S/85 largely avoids the quality control issues common to anthologies, with consistently creepy results.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com V/H/S/85 is an absolute blast of gore, laughs, fright, and mayhem. Rated: 3/4 Oct 7, 2023 Full Review David Ehrlich IndieWire Truth be told, the only thing stranger than the “V/H/S” franchise waiting six movies to revisit the ’80s is how little it does with the decade when it finally goes there. Rated: C Oct 6, 2023 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com Pretty much just a bunch of stuff you’ve seen before, only now with some mildly ironic twists and tweaks to adjust for retrospective tracking. Rated: 1.5/4 Oct 6, 2023 Full Review Emily von Seele Daily Dead There’s no obvious weak link and it really feels like the filmmakers are all bringing their A game to this installment. Rated: 5/5 Sep 14, 2025 Full Review Rebecca Sayce FILMHOUNDS Magazine For fans of the franchise, V/H/S/85 is sure to be a welcome watch in time for Halloween that offers varied stories wrapped up in nostalgic eighties visuals perfect for a cosy watch as the nights draw in. Rated: 3/5 Jul 24, 2025 Full Review James Preston Poole Discussing Film As a combination of short films, V/H/S/85 goes down fine. That’s all. A couple of them are great examples of the anthology format, one is so well done you wish there was more, and another feels like it outright didn’t understand the assignment. chris m i had given up on the franchise. 'v/h/s/85' establishes itself as one of the best entries in the saga, although, of course, it still ranks behind the first film, which remains an undisputed benchmark. this anthology manages to combine creativity, tension, and originality, offering segments that impress with their style, structure, and technical execution. each segment is well-written, directed, edited, and produced, showing that the 'v/h/s' format can remain fresh and terrifying when handled with talent. what struck me the most was the originality of the segments. unlike other entries that rely on clichés, here each story has its own twist, and the effects feel realistic and believable, maintaining the sense that you are watching authentic footage. the film succeeds in recapturing the classic 'v/h/s' essence, where tension arises from both what is seen and what is implied. my favorite segment was 'no wake', undoubtedly the one that initially made me think i was going to see a solid film within this style. its narrative construction, pacing, and the way it combines fear with mystery make it a memorable segment. on the other hand, i highlight the segment recreating the mexico earthquake, a risky choice since it is based on a real tragedy. still, according to audience reactions, it was well received, managing to convey tension and horror without falling into sensationalism. throughout much of the film, i found myself asking questions about the development of the stories, the characters’ decisions, and the limits of fear posed in each segment. this effect recalls what the earlier entries in the saga achieved, although here it comes across with a more modern and polished tone, showing that the franchise continues to evolve without losing its essence. in conclusion, 'v/h/s/85' manages to balance risk, originality, and fidelity to the saga, offering a horror experience that mixes the supernatural with the realistic, keeping the viewer engaged and surprised. it is an entry that not only entertains but also demonstrates that the 'v/h/s' format remains a powerful medium for telling horror stories in an innovative way. spanish: daba a la franquicia por perdida. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/29/25 Full Review Jackson M. A very enjoyable movie that has great acting, and overall is genuinely terrifying Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/15/25 Full Review Caleb L A very dark and gritty entry into this series. Honestly one of the best aesthetically speaking. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/25 Full Review Melissa L I have no idea why the ratings are so high. The beginning was great, but then got worse. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/10/25 Full Review Dixie D Un cliché atras de otro. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/29/25 Full Review Alex T I've always had a soft spot for the V/H/S series, and 85 doesn't disappoint. As usual, it's a mix of found footage stories-some hit, some miss-but the good ones are really good. They lean into the analog horror vibe hard this time, and it works. The grainy video quality, the weird edits, the "did I just see that?" moments-it all adds to the creep factor. The standout segments for me were the sci-fi body horror one and the one involving the cult-it reminded me a bit of The Void. There's also some genuine weirdness here that I appreciated. Like, it's not just trying to scare you, it's trying to disturb you in that old-school VHS rental you regret watching alone kind of way. That said, a couple of the stories felt rushed or ended too abruptly, which is kind of the curse of anthology films. Still, there's enough creativity and nasty fun here to make it a solid entry in the series. If you're into found footage and you know what you're signing up for, this one delivers.
