Namrata Joshi Outlook It's this relentlessness of the action and technology that make the film more of a simulated ride. I wouldn't have boarded. Rated: 1/4 Jan 4, 2019 Full Review Wally Hammond Time Out What's left is a world of industrial Gothicism, nightmare morphing effects, ahistoric gadgetry and Breughel-lite grotesquerie. Nov 1, 2018 Full Review Will Self London Evening Standard The exteriors are fantastic, the castles mega-looming, and there's a beautiful -- if fanciful -- masqued ball which shows off to perfection the costumes contrived by Gabriella Pescucci. Jan 9, 2018 Full Review Sloan Freer Radio Times This is Indiana Jones meets Hammer Horror - the relentless action is blended with a knowing undercurrent and dramatic gothic styling. Rated: 3/5 Feb 8, 2024 Full Review Micheal Compton Bowling Green Daily News The humor, most of which comes from a monk as a comic sidekick, doesnt work here either. It just emphasizes how campy the whole premise really is. Nov 16, 2019 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens Hugh Jackman stars as the sexiest Van Helsing to ever hit the screen. Even more impressive... is his larger than life screen presence and physicality that keeps his character from becoming overshadowed by the incredible amount of CGI and monster effects Rated: 3/5 Nov 3, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Wendel L Direção: Ok Atuação: Bom Roteiro: Ok Caracterização: Bom Soundtrack: Ok Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review Rookiri K I officially have a new favorite movie. This movie must have suffered from bad marketing or was ahead of its time if people didn't like it. It's a very fun, campy, and honestly interesting plotline. Like it is so over the top for everything, I think the actors did an amazing job keeping a straight face while doing and saying dumb stuff. Hugh Jackman gives a performance that he definitely channeled for Deadpool so if you like him in that you'll get to enjoy another fun performance from him. The whole cast really did a great job towing the line between serious and goofy. It's got fun Buffy-esque action and special effects, some amazing deadpan humor, really cool monster designs and lore. I wish this had become what Scream is to slasher movies but for monster movies. Very fun watch, it's on Netflix right now, it gave me a lot of giggles. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Shannon S Brilliant movie as a lover of fantasy and action this was brilliant easily one of my favourite movies Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/06/24 Full Review Alberto A This film gives classic horror fans like myself chills. A little fast paced but the story is witty, adventurous and original and somehow stays true to the classics. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/05/24 Full Review Matthew D Entertaining adventure with a charming camp feel. Stephen Sommers’ horror adventure Van Helsing (2004) is not scary, nor does it’s overabundance of dated CGI creatures hold up, but it remains a fun action movie with plenty of personality and Gothic style. Sommers’ direction is pretty neat with a fun tone, centered around his goofy jokes, and exciting action sequences. He misses on making the horror scary, but there’s some frightening images. The action and adventure story is the real treat as Van Helsing is like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but told like an Indiana Jones movie. Sommers’ script is weak with underdeveloped characters and random plot points all over the place. However, his characters are memorable, charming, funny, and unique with a good sense of who each character is at heart. Jim May, Bob Ducsay, and Kelly Matsumoto’s editing is kind of everywhere. Van Helsing did not need 3 editors. Maybe they could have used even more people to cut off a few minutes as Van Helsing drags along to its conclusion at a needlessly long 132 minutes for a barebones plot. Allen Daviau’s cinematography has nice close-up and mid shots throughout Van Helsing, but his wide shots reveal too much of the gross CGI in bad lighting. Allan Cameron’s creepy production design looks real with a Gothic flair. Alan Silvestri’s score is riveting and exciting. He gets you interested in fighting off vampires, werewolves, and other ghouls alongside Van Helsing. All the lavish and ornate costumes are very neat and make you feel like you’re watching the era. Hugh Jackman is engaging as Van Helsing with a ferocious charisma and lackadaisical nihilism. His endearing chemistry with the lovely Kate Beckinsale is great. Beckinsale is gorgeous in her corset, blouse, tights, and sword combo fit. She’s endearing, likable, cool, and brave as Princess Anna Valerious. She’s as valorous as her name implies with a strong female lead alongside Hugh Jackman’s man of action Van Helsing. Elena Anaya is phenomenal as Dracula’s redhead bride Aleera. Her Romanian accent is the most fun with her bloodlust and playful taunting. Silvia Colloca is commanding as Verona, Dracula’s brunette bride. I liked Josie Maran as Dracula’s teasing blonde bride Marishka. I have to hand it to Richard Roxburgh as a campy, over the top, Count Vladislaus Dracula. He chews up the scenery like few movie villains accomplish. I wish he were in the movie more as Dracula in person, instead of the ugly CGI monstrosity. David Wenham is very funny as Friar Carl with his lust, technology, wit, and general cowardice. Shuler Hensley is surprisingly quite moving as Frankenstein’s Monster. In all, Van Helsing is not a great filmmaking showcase, but the cast elevates an alright movie into a thoroughly enjoyable one! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/01/24 Full Review Landon J Not a bad entry to the 2000's dark hero action genre. Can be quite cheesy at times. Worth watching for Hugh Jackman alone.
