Critics Consensus

A scarily effective horror outing, Veronica proves it doesn't take fancy or exotic ingredients to craft skin-crawling genre thrills.

Andrew Whalen Newsweek There's nothing in it that will surprise horror movie aficionados. Jun 11, 2018 Full Review Ed Potton Times (UK) A considerable buzz online suggested that this Spanish horror might arrest the recent run of iffy Netflix movies. Sadly, it doesn't. Rated: 2/5 Mar 9, 2018 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety Its ideas aren't ultimately original enough or its scares potent enough to suggest Plaza wouldn't benefit from trying his directorial hand at someone else's screenplay. Mar 4, 2018 Full Review Sebastian Zavala Kahn Me gusta el cine “Veronica” is a fairly conventional supernatural horror film, which nevertheless stands out thanks to the stylised direction of co-writer Paco Plaza, and the solid main performance of the young Sandra Escacena, in her film debut. Thompson Rue Morgue Magazine When the camera and sound design are doing the heavy lifting, Veronica soars, but Plaza’s lack of restraint brings it crashing down, time and again. Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Chris Joyce Movies and Munchies (YouTube) With a driving, but unrushed pace, the narrative pulls us into the terrors, complete with shadowy things that go bump in the night and menacing forces that are nothing short of evil. Ishan K Isn't that scarry as it was portrayed. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review av 8 I watched this the first time pretty soon after it was released. I had just begun learning Spanish and I felt excited when I could understand a good deal of the conversations they were having. That was the one reason I felt attached to the movie, I suppose? I decided to give it another watch recently, and during the initial sequences, I could not fully fathom why I had adored the movie as much as I had, as a child. Sandra Escacena's acting did not come off as anything exceptional to me, though Bruna González, Claudia Placer and Iván Chavero gave appreciable performances for their ages. The mood was far from eerie, and the characters were generic, try-hard horror movie tropes. A lot of the explanation revolves around some weird monthly occult magazine that Verónica has subscribed to, and is not satisfactory. It brought nothing new to the table. The problems, the solutions, the 'jump scares' — all quite unoriginal. Perhaps not in the Spanish Cinema, how would I know, but it has certainly been tread over and over till the paths have worn in several others. However, the climax did make me realize why I had decided to cut this one some slack all those years back. It was not a theatrical showdown, but it was rather fast-paced, and the typical thing I would expect from an average horror piece. This movie can be watched once (and maybe again, half a dozen years later, and it wouldn't be too bad). Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review Audience Member the director is missing so many potential, idk maybe they want to stay true with the 'based of a real story' many of the scene are unnecessary, terrible, and the music is questionable. i can't believe people still recommending this. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/27/25 Full Review Alex H The actress does a terrific job acting. The horror film is very solid. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/01/25 Full Review Mandy S I had heard that this was the scariest horror film ever made so of course I watched it at 3am it was not in the least bit scary in fact it was a yawn fest Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/25 Full Review Egypt M Wasn’t scary at all Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/05/25 Full Review Read all reviews
