Critics Consensus

An uneven collection of found-footage horror films, V/H/S has some inventive scares but its execution is hit-and-miss.

London Evening Standard A nauseating experience on every level. Rated: 2/5 Jan 18, 2013 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Smart, scary stuff. Rated: 4/5 Jan 17, 2013 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) Several of the shorts build ingeniously, and their brevity solves the serial problem of found footage, which is how to maintain interest and plausibility in shaky-cam antics for a whole feature. Rated: 3/5 Jan 17, 2013 Full Review Brian Bisesi Horror Movie Club Podcast V/H/S is hindered by the onslaught of unlikable, misogynistic characters in nearly every one of its segments, but it succeeds due to creative premises and the effective use of the found footage technique to achieve shocking, intense, and scary moments. SkyRo P V/H/S, a 2012 horror film, tries to capture the raw, found-footage feel of The Blair Witch Project, but ends up feeling like a cheap imitation. It aims to be original by stringing together short horror segments within a larger narrative, but nothing ever really sticks. It feels disjointed, forced, and honestly, pretty disappointing. The film opens with a disturbing scene involving the sexual assault of a woman—presented in a casual, almost normalized way—which was extremely off-putting. It felt like a failed attempt at shock value with no real consequence or purpose. The movie leans hard into trying to appear gritty and “real,” but instead, it comes off as fake and overly staged. One of my biggest gripes is the unrealistic camera work. If someone’s being chased through the woods by a killer, are they seriously going to make sure the camera is perfectly capturing every angle? It breaks the immersion completely and reminds you you’re watching something trying too hard to be edgy. The entire concept had potential, but it falls flat. It lacked authenticity, the scares weren’t effective, and the overall execution just didn’t work for me. I was hoping for something more grounded or at least more compelling in its paranormal elements—but this felt hollow, chaotic, and honestly, kind of lame. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/07/25 Full Review Audience Member Some of the found footage stories were quite good and creative but overall this movie felt a bit disjointed. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Alexis R I wish I could give this a 0 star rating. Not even 30 minutes into the movie and I turned it off. The first scene of the movie shows 2 men sexually assault a woman (lifting her shirt and recording her chest). This made me so uncomfortable watching this happen, even if this was fake. Other than that, I was very confused the whole 12 minutes I watched this film. The camera work was lousy, the acting is mediocre and the audio is terrible I couldn’t understand what was going on. Do not recommend!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/03/25 Full Review Audience Member It definitely wasvery creepy, but some story just weren´t it and the others were very good. So its an up and down for me Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/29/24 Full Review Erik B A pretty decent effort - an anthology of found-footage format stories that are all tied together through another found-footage style setup. Pretty decent effects and definitely creepy, but the jankiness of the filming makes it a bit difficult to watch at times. Still, a worthy effort, and it made me want to explore the remainder of the series. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
