Melissa Anderson Artforum Equal parts love story and horror show, it honors two unapologetically unassimilable women. May 22, 2014 Full Review Moira MacDonald Seattle Times Ultimately, "Vic + Flo" becomes both horrific and strangely, surreally beautiful, in a final moment in the afternoon sun. Rated: 3/4 Mar 13, 2014 Full Review Dan Sullivan Film Comment Magazine Côté and his collaborators have crafted an astounding movie that doesn't care about being adored but that certainly demands to be dealt with. Feb 14, 2014 Full Review Jordan M. Smith IONCINEMA.com Vic + Flo Saw A Bear strikes a perfect balance of observational apprehension that some of his earlier work seems to overwork in the more formal aspects of his style. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 4, 2020 Full Review Allen Almachar The MacGuffin It exists successfully as an enigma, but falters as a gripping character drama. It's like a jigsaw puzzle put together only to show a blank picture. Rated: C+ Jul 28, 2020 Full Review C.J. Prince Way Too Indie Vic + Flo Saw A Bear is a very strange film, one that's fully realized yet feels like it can veer off into any direction at a moment's notice. Audience Member It met and exceeded my expectations for the film. Another perfect film for the annual celebration. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member I never knew what to expect or what might be coming in this movie; perpetually moving into the unknown and unexpected. I like that. We think we entered at the beginning of the story but gradually discover that we've been dropped into these character's lives and we're not always brought up to speed on what's happening and what the relationships are. It's an incomplete discovery process. The audience has to accept some gaps in their knowledge of the characters and situations - or be incredibly frustrated. Strong performances all around with a lot of really uncomfortable characters. We're ambivalent about even the most sympathetic characters and outright unsettled by others. The only misstep is the intrusion of some fantastical elements right at the end which seem designed to comfort the audience and offer a sense of closure. It doesn't fit stylistically or tonally. Just ignore that part. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Hey! Do you feel like watching an absurd film, with annoying characters who have unexplained motivations for doing really stupid things? How about a film with a really surprising last 10 minutes that flicks the switch to even more macabre and melodramatic? Great, then watch this, otherwise steer well clear.
